Classic Shell for Windows 8

Build it yourself?

I assume that I can't actually use it, without downloading a stack of other software (e.g. Visual Studio 2K8)?

That rules it out as a tool for ordinary Windows users.
Having to build it yourself is too much like Linux.

I wasted a couple of hours the other day, trying to install a new version of a media player in Ubuntu.

There was a constant stream of:

  • Complaints about missing items (of course it never named the specific missing items).
  • Swearing from me. :D

OMG, I hate using IE!
Does anyone know how to disable "smart selection" in IE9 & IE10?

Build what yourself?

Ivo's program is just a small download. It will take you a few minutes to customise your start menu entries, skins, etc.

Aha!

I downloaded the zip (source files) instead of the exe. :o

I was only planning to test "Classic Shell" out (for possible future usage - W8 RC).
W8 CP is still basically unusable, since it refuses to correctly install my sound driver.

What happens when you press the Win key?
Also, check your settings. Did you select that Left Click does nothing?

Iehnerus, I'm a dedicated Firefox user, but I have found IE 10 to be better. Give it a chance.

It's OK for viewing web pages.
It's horrible if you need to input info.

I hate:
The non-customisable GUI.
The "smart selection" (I always turn it off in Word).

I hate the orange button in FF too.

I got my New York Yankees Start menu up in the house, with Classic Shell!

When it is not pressed on, it doesn't glow like above (ignore Aero color differences - I have it set to change with the current application in Windows, on the fly):

It should be popular

OK, now that I have the correct installer, I can say that this is a very nice utility. :D

I can foresee a large number of downloads, if MS continues on its current course.

I hope you are earning some "click" income for this Ivo. :)

I,m out of step! I am very happy with Vista start Menu. Does everything, and more, that the old menus could do. But, darn - No start button on the left hand corner of the taskbar! LOL.

If it works for you - great.

I tried Vista start menu - it was fine - but I thought startmenu 7 - from the same developer was better.

Ivo's program is a little different - it is doesn't have the big expanded menu like startmenu7, and it doesn't have the white transparency option.

On the other hand, it is more compact, and the start orb works well.

I am sure the developers of these programs will continue to work on them - demand is likely to increase.

By "big expanded menu" do you mean multiple columns. You can enable that in the Classic Shell menu from the "Menu Look" tab, "Use multiple columns" option or "Auto" which uses multiple columns if they fit on the screen or else automatically reverts to a scrolling single column view.

No, I tried having two columns- opening a directory from there caused explorer crashes.

Works fine without that.

Are the crashes reproducible every time or what exactly do you get the crashes so it can be fixed in Classic Shell.

FWIW, 2 columns working well for me, even when opening folders. Maybe there is something specific to SIW2's machine.

Excellent Program I even managed to add a Computer shortcut to the menu on the right side and replicate power button options,

Special Objects?

Does anyone know where I can find a list of the "special objects", so that I can create more tools for the Windows Explorer toolbar?

For example, how would I create an "Open with default program" button (like the one on the W7 Windows Explorer Command bar)?

It seems to be working properly on my W8 CP.
