Classic Shell for Windows 8

If you can find a machine where the installer EXE is able to run, you can use the commands "extract64" to extract the MSI from the EXE. Then copy it to the Win8 machine and install it.

I've downloaded the latest setup program 3.6.8 again and just tried to extract the 64bit msi using a window 7 Pro SP1 32bit laptop and now get the same side-by-side error on Win 7 32bit which worked before. I even tried 3.6.5 which fails with the same error. Microsoft must of changed something in one of the security updates. It can't be the virus checker because they aren't run on the internal servers which also fail. I can't think of any common thing that links all the units I have tried together making every one fail, each downloading their own version of the setup program.

EDIT
Just tried XP Pro and get This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect.

I'm at a loss why only I can't run it when it is obvious that others can.

XP won't work. The installer requires at least Vista to run. I have not seen other reports about SxS issues before. Must be something specific for your network. Try finding a PC outside of your network and see if the installer will extract.

Kaspersky had a fit over the install download - thought you'd want to know. I installed it on 8, and it's working just fine.

Does it say "I have not seen this file before, must be something bad"?

Can't look at it again, since I told Kaspersky to download it anyway- it was the big red scary box that comes up when K warns you of a bad site.

Can't remember if it was like this before, I now have a slightly odd winrt entry under search

Yeah, that's quite weird. Export your settings to XML file and attach it here.

Oh, I see. I thought those 3 lines were the entire file but there's more.
Looks like you have "shell:Searches" set to open in the Search folder. That's where that extra winrt item is coming from.

I don't know how to get that search function going in the right pane on 3.9

You can use a custom item and set its link to "shell:searches", just like before. You can't have sub-items like "search for people" though.

I'm curious how Classic Shell works with Windows 8.1. Does it replace the Windows start orb or run over the top of it?
