CHKDSK - Check a Drive for Errors in Windows 8

Hi Shawn,

Often when I do a System Image backup I get a message saying that bad blocks (or clusters, can't remember the exact term) were found and not backed up.

I can re-run the System Image and get a good one, but I'd prefer to resolve the problem if I can. (At one point I think I had resolved it using dism.bat but I ran this today and there were things that were not fixed).

Should I run chkdsk /b to try and resolve this or is a different option better?

Thanks

I find chkdsk/r windows 8 seems to set at 27% for a long time now a hour, does not seem to work as well as other windows have in the past as I ran drive check and new drive sea gate tools or mini tool partition wizard drive fine only since Windows 8 seems to get issues other systems with 7 never like this. I get locked into this might try /f see if that is the same just had this on two different units using 8 HP laptop and home unit. I had even checked disc and wiped it clean totally windows 8 seems to act up wonder if that is why it put system into repair mode more often then should happen.

It can take quite long for it to run especially on large drives but is worth the wait. The few times I have run it, it hangs at 27% for a long time. Just have to be patient and go have a beer or two. If the drive light shows activity, it is working.

Hi there,

Since my W8 updated to 8.1 without my approval, I am unable to check this out for myself. Please, those of you who have mastered both W8 and 8.1 share your knowledge with me.

Looking at the tutorial on how to run CHKDSK on W8 and 8.1, it points out that you can access the This PC screen by using the Windows + E key combinations for both versions of W8.

My question...

Will the Windows + X key open the Power user menu on both W8 and 8.1, or is that option only available on 8.1?

Thank you,
Donna :)
