This tutorial shows how to disable the Charm bar - on Metro start menu and desktop.

Is there a possibility (reg hack ?) to disable the Charm bar only on desktop - like "Classic Shell" it does ?

Hello NiFu,

Not that I'm aware of. The setting to disable the Charms bar TR and BR corners is universal for both the Metro and desktop. :(

I have done the download to stop the charms from appearing and it didn't work, even though I did it again, and have rebooted.

Hello Vann,

Just to help clarify. This tutorial will not disable the Charms bar. It only disables the Charms hint from opening for when the pointer is moved to the upper or lower right corners of the display in only your user account.

From the top of the tutorial.

Note   Note
When you disable the Charms Bar hint in Windows 8, you will still be able to open the Charms Bar using any other method below.

How to Open the Charms Bar in Windows 8 and 8.1

Please clarify if this is what you meant or not. :)

Ok, perhaps it stopped what it was supposed to stop, but the problem I am having is that the charms bar on the right keeps appearing all the time, and it is something I never use. I just want it to go away.

Is the Charms bar appearing while using a touchpad by chance?

I registered to this forum to say 'THANK YOU'. I just got this new windows 8.1 laptop and the charms bar was driving me
nuts. Of all of the hints I found about how to get rid of this microsoft pita, yours was the best. The charms crap still comes
up, but not nearly as much as when I first got this laptop. Thanks again.

I've kind of given up.

I thought what was posted here would get rid of the 8.1 charms bar. It did, for a while. But, the damn thing is
back. So, I tried the Winaero charm bar remover, the classic shell charm bar remover and many more things
revolving around using regedit. I used to have XP and I can't remember when I last had to use regedit.
So far, with 8.1, I've been using it daily. So, I'm going back to windows 7 until I can get WINE running in a decent
linux distribution. Windows 8.1 seems to be the ultimate expression of the microsoft 'you can't get there from here'
software policy and I'm not going to put up with it any longer - you can't change the icon text, you can't change
the contrast on your screen, you can't ... and on and on. Then we get into the concept of 8.1 and the microsoft
account where anything you do will undoubtably end up in the NSA servers.

Windows 8.1 seems to be the best sales tool for windows 7 and linux resellers.

End of rant.

Rwal,

The tutorial on the first page only disables the Charms hint corner, and not completely.

Did you already disable edge swipes for your touchpad if applicable?
