Solved Ccleaner And Windows 8

hello.
i was wondering if you have to use ccleaner once in a while on windows 8 64 bit,just like with windows 7.
maybe it is a stupid question because my laptop is not running slow or anything,but i mean when the time comes.
i am a newbie to windows 8.

I had always used Ccleaner with Windows 8 before I upgraded to Windows 8.1 without any problem.
I used to set it run at the startup or when I feel that the computer needs cleaning or after removing a virus or whenever I want without any problem. :thumb:

I'll take the contrary position and say you've never needed to run CCleaner at all. While I won't say it's completely without value, you should only be running it on an as-needed basis at most. If you need to run it with any degree of regularity that should tell you that you need to take a step back and evaluate your computer using habits to figure out why you are leaving so much crap in your wake that it needs to be cleaned up on such a frequent basis.

Once upon a time CCleaner was a nice little program targeted at people who would understand the various risks and benefits to each option. Then it was "discovered" by people who think they know more about troubleshooting computers than they actually do and used as a means of proving their knowledge to those who knew even less. The CCleaner developers responded by dumbing down the program considerably and adding a bunch of dubious features. On the one hand, it's hard to fault them for giving customers what they want, but on the other hand it's always sad to see a once good program go down the path of scope creep.

You don't need to use CCleaner at all on any Windows OS never mind Windows 8/8.1.

It's largely just trivial stuff that makes no difference, some things it does, or rather let it do, actually slows up your use of Applications.

I use CCleaner on a regular basis on my Windows 8.1 system and it usually removes over 500mb of temporary files. If these files are in place when Windows Defender or Malwarebytes runs, it has to sort through all of those temporary files looking for virus signatures. It's better to be rid of them.

My sister has Windows 7 on her Dell 17r laptop. I used CCleaner on it and removed 2gb of temporary files.

I too think Ccleaner is a targeting program, meaning if you are having difficulty removing a program, then it is good to run. I used it to remove excess java files from an earlier install. I used it to free up space on a small HDD that needed it.

You can use Disk Cleanup to free up some space, so Ccleaner is really not needed for freeing space, though it can help perhaps. Most people have plenty of space.

Ccleaner can potentially slow down your computer if you aren't careful. Remove certain excess files, and your computer may have to re-create them. Also, if it is set to startup with the computer, it can take a tinsy bit more time to boot (longer with slower computers, negligible with faster ones).

Does it? Why? What facts are there to support this position? Not anecdotal testimonials, mind, actual facts where someone has done a detailed analysis and shown that indeed this is necessary for the following reasons, which are then listed. I've never once come across anything of the sort, so if you are aware of something I am not, I would be most interested in looking at it.

This reminds me of the almost superstitious belief people have on cell phone forums that formatting a partition on the phone's storage more than once will somehow get to things that were missed the first time. It demonstrates a stunning lack of understanding about how computers (which smartphones essentially are) work. Anyone who knows even the very basics will be able to tell them that at most all they're doing is wasting a perfectly good write cycle on the flash cells, but they'll keep right on a-doin' it. Sometimes I wonder how long it will be until they do something akin to the hokey-pokey dance in an effort to ensure success.

There are better things to do instead of trusting some program to do it for you, don't let it get dirty in first place. Using a program like Revo uninstaller to uninstall programs with no "tails" left in the form of registry and file leftovers. Ccleaner and such, can't help there much if at all. Turning off history in browsers will keep temp files at minimum. Windows' own Disk Cleaner can take care of much of the rest including windows update backups. As System Restore can take a lot of space, keep it large enough for only two or three last points. All together, "cleaning" may even slow some things down. Browsers use temporary files to speed up loading of pages already visited and some programs will rebuild their temp folders as soon as they are restated (MS Office does a lot of that). So cleaning like that may make more damage than good.

Another is Classic Shell or Start8. Makes Win 8, 8.1 easier to use for many people but even there I see people complaining about using anything that is not part of the OS.

Point is that it doesn't help much if at all and at the end you may end up worse after it. Check those tests which mirror my experience.

As CountMike pointed out, it's not an issue of whether or not there are other means of doing the same thing (though that does eat into the utility argument, leaving only convenience of a central location), it's an issue of whether they are necessary at all.

Classic Shell/Start8 actually add functionality. Arguably it's unnecessary and is a backwards step in usability when you consider the horribly inefficient use of screen space represented by a cascading menu, but it undeniably ADDS functionality. There's also more to Classic Shell than just adding a start menu back to Win 8.x. CCleaner offers no new functionality to the OS, it basically just strings together a selection of functions that already exists elsewhere.

Additionally, there's the point of whether or not performing these tasks has any net benefit at all. I wasn't just being facetious before, I'm genuinely interested if someone can provide proof that these programs actually help. Proof gathered in a way as close to the scientific method as is possible using computers. Which means you don't just run the test one time, look at the results and make a conclusion. You run the test 3-5 times, if not more, and then if every single time there's a clear pattern emerging, you may be on to something.

Then finally, I kind of have to stop and smirk a little at the idea of installing a separate program -- a program that will take up space on the HDD as a necessity -- in an effort to free up disk space. If you're really jonesing for a few MB of space (or a handful of bytes if we're talking about the registry) when we computers are now coming with HDDs in the 500-2TB range right from the factory, wouldn't it make more sense to save the disk space CCleaner (or similar) takes up and use existing methods which are "free" on account of being part of the OS already?

Of course I'm a proactive sort of person. I'd rather spend my time preventing problems from happening than spending a bunch of time routinely cleaning up the mess left behind.

I'll admit CCleaner has never, ever solved a single problem for me. That is not what it's for.

It has also never, ever caused me a problem and I've been using it for quite a few years.

It does remove useless files from my hard drive that take up space. Usually 500MB to 1GB per day gets deleted when I run it. Not a lot, even on my 250GB SSD but I like getting rid of those files, makes me feel better. I run it every night before I power down. Takes 5 to 10 seconds to run.

I also use the Startup tool to keep unwanted stuff from running when I boot and the System Restore tool to monitor restore points, make sure they are being created as they should be.

This is another personal choice thing, you either do or don't like it, no middle ground it seems.

Sorry, I need to clarify. I don't believe Ccleaner speeds up computers. It did for me in the past with a very old clunker, which ran XP and had less than 1 GB of RAM on it. Removing a lot of the excess just gave it a small boost to get it moving faster. I do not have a test for you, as the computer was XP, and I purged all XP from my life. You do not have to believe me on this, as it is useless information now anyway... As I have not since experienced a speed increase (or decrease) through Ccleaner - all of my computers have since been updated with modern technology. Computers today are generally faster, and these jimmy-gimmicks aren't going to help in the speed department.

I HAVE, however, removed some really annoying things that I did not want on my computer with it, mainly just because I didn't want them on it.
I heard about the major security flaws with the java program, so I removed every spec of it. I had difficulty installing a previously installed program, and Ccleaner came to the rescue. Removed the previous bits and allowed the install.

I am a fan of built-in features. I use IE, Disk Cleaner, Optimizer (Windows defragmenter), I never use start menu programs, other optimizers, registry cleaners (save Ccleaner), etc. However, Ccleaner HAS been of use to me in the past. I do not willy-nilly remove all entries, however. Only the things that I know are safe to remove because they are linked to a particular program, etc, and I can see their location (program files for example). In other words, targeted removal.

I would also recommend anyone not experienced with computers to avoid using Ccleaner as the benefit is nearly negligible. But it HAS helped ME. If a program will not remove itself completely when I tell it to, I will.

Stuff like that could be done with built in tools in Windows. It's easier to put "God Mode" on desktop and every utility in Windows can be reached.

I use God Mode---



But I also use CCleaner Pro.
Just now I had an issue with an unwanted context menu item.
I used the registry tool in CCleaner & it showed the culprit.
I "fixed all issues" & the unwanted context menu item went away.

That was easy to fix.
