You must capture the Image from within another OS or use WinPE

Dism /Capture-Image /CaptureDir:C:\ /ImageFile:"D:\Install.wim" /Name:"Windows 8.1 x64 OS" /CheckIntegrity
The capture directory is listed as C - but will not always be the case (depending)

Excuse me, what is an advantage of custom factory recovery over a traditional full system backup? For me, backup is more easy and convenient way; it allows to keep a number of copies unlike a single recovery image, which needs the regular update of wim file. The only bonus is that factory recovery is independent operation while restoration of backup needs an external boot (like a flash drive). Maybe I missed something?

I need all my current windows settings/updates etc..captured to new WIM file, then replace the WIM in my installation media.
But, alas I can find no tutorial in this vast Web of how to do it without some complex stuff like another OS or use WinPE.
Has any body done this on Win8 ?
Decided just to clone my disk to portable usb HDD with recovery file on seperate Usb.

you can not capture the OS as a wim unless it is Offline
Thus the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is used to restore the Recovery Image as the OS is offline
