Solved Can't Record Audio playing from computer

I've been attempting to screen capture with Ice Cream Screen Recorder and each time, it doesn't record the audio from the computer. I thought maybe the software settings were off, but it was enabled to record the audio. I looked at my recording devices and noticed that I had 4.

(my Playback devices):

The sound bar obviously works on my Asus monitor (playback devices) but I get no results for anything in the recording.


Some pertinent information:
1) Motherboard: asus motherboard z97-ar
2) Graphics card: evga gtx 750 ti ftw
3) I play my audio through my monitor which is connected to my computer via HDMI. The HDMI is connected to the HDMI output on my graphics card
4) I have a Blues Yeti microphone that occasionally gets plugged in.

I know that I have to make Stereo Mix as default, which I did, but the sound bars don't light up.


I've done some reading but I'm completely lost. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Is the recorder program set to record audio from the Stereo Mix?

For testing, try to record audio (you can record audio from YouTube for example) from the Internet to a program such as the free Audacity recording program. If this works, the problem would appear to be in the recorder program you are using.

I've tried that and set the microphone input to Stereo Mix but I get nothing but a flat line. If I play a youtube video or something, the sound bar in the recording devices window for Stereo Mix doesn't do anything.

I haven't tried it ever. I recently built my PC a few months back and I didn't have a use for it until now.

I think I figured this out. What I'm guessing is the problem is that the Stereo Mix uses Realtek drivers while I connected my HDMI to my NVIDIA Graphics card. I played around a bit and came to the following conclusion:
I needed to get the "speakers" playback device enabled so I put in a 3.5 mm extension cord (male to male) into the green 3.5mm jack in the back of my system. I configured it to act as a Headphone in the Realtek Audio Manager and then went to the devices and set the "Speakers" as default. In the recording tab, I set stereo mix to "listen to this device" and "playback" my HDMI connected monitor for sound (so my sound works). Then it works properly and I can record my system audio. One thing I noticed was that my monitor audio sounded lower when the playback device was set to "Speakers" than the actual monitor so I decided to attempt configuring the front audio ports and see if I would get a same reaction.

Bottom line - I was able to configure the front audio port to act like a speaker when a 3.5mm cable was plugged in and Stereo Mix works wonderfully. The caveat is I need to connect the cable to the port before recording and changing the default device, but the alternate would be to run a 3.5 mm cord from the computer to the monitor. Problem solved, thanks fireberd for your help!

Maybe the settings is conflict with your hardware, try to switch to default settings,

Using Stereo Mix to record audio never works on my computer, i don't know why, later i choose to use more professional screen recorder. so i think you can change a method to do this

Stereo Mix records perfectly on ALL of my PC's and on ALL of my client's PC's.

go to your sound (right click on speaker icon in lower right on desktop) click on recording devices. This will bring up the sound recording box, now make sure whatever it is you want to monitor is on by default. Lets assume its a microphone thats plugged in, click on properties,this will bring up another box which lists usually five choices. General,Listen,levels,enhancements, advanced. Go to listen, it will bring up a box and one of the choices is "listen to this device", check it. now close it. You should be hearing something coming out of your speakers on your monitor.(assuming you have something plugged in and playing)You may have to adjust the volume up to hear it. Obviously down if its distorting. Problem solved.

I've been fighting this problem for weeks. I'm a professional sound reinforcement guy (soundguy). I do the sound for outdoor acoustic (bluegrass) festival events, and I have been recording and editing the events for years. It used to be simple enough to get computer generated audio from sources like the internet, or Winamp into my Digital Audio workstation software, Cool Edit Pro using the "windows" stereo mixer, but after installing Windows 10, it just isn't possible, it would seem, without actually having to downgrade to something like "Audacity".
After reading through this post I tried all kinds of things I had read about.

Earlier, I attempted to install a SoundBlaster Live card as an alternative to my rather poor built-in onboard (Azalia, RealTek, HD Audio) sound device, but my machine would not even start with The Soundblaster card in my machine, not even into the bios (no post).

Eventually, the crazy thing is, I did something really stupid simple....I tried plugging a pair of headphones into the line out jack.

It Worked!!

As long as there is something plugged into that jack, my recording software will see a signal from the "speakers" device in the sound control panel. It will only work if the "speaker" device is the default device under playback devices. Stereo mixer is selected in recording devices and the the "listen to this device' box is unchecked to prevent feedback (and it WILL feed back internally if it's checked!!)

I fought with this problem for quite a while, and I'll be damned If I can figure out what's going on, but it is working, and I'm not gonna complain. Very strange behavior for Windows 10 and Realtek.

So I'm glad I tried plugging something into the line out jack... headphones are good, but anything plugged into that jack enables recording from the Stereo Mixer. I had no reason to believe that it would help, and it was quite by accident that I discovered this.

I registered into this forum just to post this comment in hopes it might help some poor soul who was struggling with this problem, and I can tell there are many.

Realtek needs to address this issue, for sure. I wasn't willing to regress back to Windows 7 just for this issue like some people were talking about doing.

I was also very happy to have my Cool Edit Pro working in Windows 10. Audacity does work after a fashion and does address this problem with "WASAPI", but, I'm sorry I just don't like Audacity after having been spoiled rotten for years using Cool Edit Pro.

I'll be curious to see how people might respond concerning this problem, and my accidental solution.

P.S. As an afterthought, my HD Audio sofware does not have a neat Sound Manager like the one shown at the top of this post and I would like to have that feature, even thought it probably would not solve this problem. I have to do everything using the "sound control panel" and it's a pain in the U know what to access through settings.
