two machines, one running 8.1 pro, the other 8.1... i can easily, very quickly, and reliably connect to the pro machine from the 8.1 machine, but for the life of me i can't do the opposite, i can't connect to the 8.1 machine from the pro machine, and i'm running out of google sought solutions. when i attempt to connect to the 8.1 machine from the pro machine i can never get beyond the following error message:

as far as i can tell the settings for both machines are identical, and include:

> allow remote connection enabled
> firewalls on both machines disabled
> all related services enabled
> a recommended gpedit.msc setting adjusted (lan authentication level)
> both machines actively connected to private network
> successful pings and tracerts to both machines
> ipconfig release/renew, flush dns, etc. attempted to no avail

ironically i don't even want to connect to the pro machine from the 8.1 machine, which works perfectly, i just did it to test and it passed with flying colors. what i want, which is to connect to the 8.1 machine from the pro machine, is a different story, just can't get it to work. any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

edit: the connection is through a router / private network, i.e. the machines are in the same location/building, the connection is not through the internet.

well it looks like the following post clearly explains why i can't connect to my 8.1 machine from my pro machine, yet why i can do the opposite... amazing how many google returned "solutions" never mentioned this, that only a 8.1 pro machine can act as a remote host when using remote desktop, alas... question: will windows 10, an apparently free upgrade for 8.1 owners, offer remote hosting using remote desktop? if so, i guess i'm better off waiting a few moths for the w10 release vs paying $99 today to upgrade my one non-pro machine to pro.

btw i've tried other remote desktop programs, teamviewer comes immediately to mind, but they were clunky and laggy compared to windows remote desktop... is there a 3rd party option out there that performs as well, or better, than windows remote desktop, one that doesn't cost more than the pro upgrade? thanks again.

just downloaded teamviewer for a revisit and it has come a long way since i last used it, it's great, more than fast and responsive enough for my needs (altho i haven't tried it again using an internet connection, which was problematic the last time i tried to use it many years ago)... anyway, i no longer have a need for windows remote desktop, teamviewer work fine...
