I start the laptop then insert the USB..

I think inserting the usb & then restarting would work better.
If you have an F key to bring up the boot manager at restarting, press it to get the boot manager & select the usb to boot from.

On my computer F-12 works.
Press the F key as soon as restarting begins & hold it until the boot manager appears.
This works for me. :)

edit- You may have to go into the bios & enable the Boot Menu.

The BIOS/Basic Input Output System stored on the motherboard determines the bootup process, has to look for certain files on a storage device to know what and how to start the computer. Once that is determined the OS/Operating System will load. For the OS to read a drive it has to load device drivers, however the BIOS will have support for USB 2.0 devices but drivers for USB 3.0 devices load with the OS. Drives such as USB Thumb/Flash or External HDDs need to be prepared with the necessary files that make them bootable so the BIOS can find and start them.

I assume you copied the files contained within the ISO to USB stick and did not just copy the ISO file to USB ??

If you have a Lenovo laptop that came with Windows 8/8.1 preinstalled.

How to install Windows 8/10 64-bit in UEFI Boot Mode.

You do not need to change the UEFI firmware (BIOS) settings. For example, you do not need to change the boot order of drives, or disable Secure Boot, or enable Legacy BIOS (aka CSM) boot mode.

- Connect your Windows 8/10 64-bit USB flash drive (Note: FAT32 file system) or insert your Windows 8/10 64-bit DVD.
- Shut down your laptop.
- Press the NOVO button (see screenshots below). The system loads boot options.
- Select the BOOT MENU option.

- Select your USB/DVD from the boot menu (see screenshots below).

Wouldn't it just ignore it then just as leaving a usb full of photos would be ignored on boot?

yes, murby - it should..

just as a BIOS will ignore the (EFI) Bootmgr.efi
just as UEFI will ignore the (legacy) Bootmgr

once you get to the logo and spinning wheel it is the Boot.wim loading

So, "Boot lock", could be either invalid boot files or failure to load boot.wim
