Cannot left click unless I open and close the Start Menu or Ctrl+Alt+Del

I recently installed Windows 8 on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, which is pretty old but runs it like a champ! I am so happy for the performance it has, but I've been stumped over this issue. It's mostly random, but I'd say it happens every 5 minutes: I can't left click anything on my screen unless I press the Start Button on my keyboard to open and then close the Start Menu, or pop in and out of Ctrl+Alt+Del. I can always right click, but not left click. It seems that something is bugging out and opening the start menu seems to refresh the environment.

I'm really unsure of what to do, so any help is greatly appreciated! :)

If you have 'recently' installed W8.1 then have you installed all the Windows 8.1 updates to current status?

I assume you are referring to your touch pad left-click? Have you tried plugging in a mouse to to a USB port to see if that works OK? If it does then the issue may be with touch pad drivers needing updating.

I am running Windows 8.1

Did the problem start when you upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1?

I have an old eMachines computer that ran extremely well on Windows 8.0. I then upgraded it to 8.1, and the ride got very bumpy. So I reinstalled 8.0, and once again the ride became very smooth.

You say you have installed Windows 8. This OS had its share of problems and was replaced by Windows 8.1.

Apparently, for some it's the opposite -- 8.0 has problems for them, but 8.1 runs a lot better.

Your computer specs say that you have 2 GB of RAM. That's not a lot of RAM. An upgrade to 4 GB would be an all-around help to your computer. However, I'm not sure that it would fix this problem. (I'm also not sure that it won't.)

Why does it say "Solved" on this thread? There is nothing here to show that the question has been answered. It would be nice if Setherz6104 could enlighten us.
