[Solved]Cannot Install-Does not contain the required Free Space

Friends,
I'm unable to install Win 8 due to "Setup was unable to use the existing system partition because it does not contain the required Free Space" error, it'd nice if someone can help. The screenshot is from within Windows 7 but when I try to install from outside also by booting from the installation disk, the error is the same. Help much appreciated
Thank you

You cannot have 4 primary partitions on the disk (system reserved is also primary), max is 3. You need to convert one of those to logical. What all is installed on them?

C: = windows 7
D: = Data
F: = Free for Windows 8 Installation

I tried it after making F: as logical, still it is not allowing me to install
Do I need to make another partition as logical and let F: remain as primary?

Hmm...try deleting F: to create unallocated space and see if the installer sees it and installs there. if it doesn't create a new partition by formatting the space.

Tried, win 8 installation doesn't detect unpartitioned space in my case and repartitioned without drive letter, still no help, same problem remains

30Gb is kinda low. I'd say delete F, forma D, shrink D to more space and make it F again. Then retry.

Btw, what are your Logical drives? Simple, Basic and NTFS drives?

I think 30GB is enough and I cannot format D, D has all my data, There are no Logical drives but only one Logical Drive as you can see from the photo above and that is NTFS.

Move the files to an external drive temporarily.

If the install says not enough space, increase it and see what happens. I would lol.

paarkhi, I'm wondering whether the sysres is to be blamed. If you have the energy and good backups, you can try making sysres bigger in PW, then run the 8 install. How big? maybe 300mb.

Can I do this with Acronis Disk Director Suite which I already have installed on my system because I don't have a blank CD on hand :(

I cannot guide you with the details, but I guess you should be able to.

Can I make bigger than 300 MB (means If I make bigger than 300MB will there be any problem in booting) because this is my primary as well as active partition

Acronis Disk Director can be used. If increasing the sysres don't work, you know what you need to do right?

Another alternative would be to install on a VHD: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2393-windows-8-vhd-create-boot-dual-boot.html

You can install Win8 on a logical partition as long as you have one primary on the drive - in your case that is the 100MB partition. If it were a HDD without any OS installed, any promary would do. The installer will grab the first primary on the drive and make that active. Btw: You can also make your Win7 partition a logical.

My Win8 partition is 39GB - and that worked. Maybe you can scrape a bit off another partition.

Increasing the System Reserved Partition has solved the problem, I made it as 650MB and all my partitions are primary and I've successfully installed Win 8 Developer Preview Version
Thanks to Bill2 and all the friends who have replied. Thread Solved

how did you actually solve your problem ? when I tried to install window 8 developer preview on separate , I had installation hang at 27%, I tried everything, but finally had to install in a virtual box.

now I have the 'does not contain enough space problem' with windows 8 consumer preview.

any suggestions ?
