Solved Cannot connect to Wi-Fi on my new Windows 8 Desktop

Just got a brand-new desktop. Unfortunately, I will not be able to use an ethernet cable BUT I have a USB network adapter. I know for sure that it works (I've used it on my laptop). The network adapter seems to have installed properly; I am able to pull up "Available Networks". However, when I try to connect to my home Wi-Fi and put in my password, it always says "connecting to the network is taking longer than usual" and then never connects. Multiple other devices in the house (smartphones, laptops, desktops) are all connecting to our network with no problems.

I've tried all of the Windows troubleshooters and wizards --- didn't help.

I've tried changing the wireless network channel from 6 to 8 --- didn't help.

I've tried netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip reset reset.log hit in the command prompt --- didn't help.

It now shows that it has "limited" connection...but I cannot pull anything up in the browser. What the troubleshooter is telling me now is: "Wi-Fi does not have a valid IP configuration".

Not quite sure what this means... somebody please help!!! I've been waiting a long time to get a new computer and connecting to the internet is kind of a big part of me utilizing it!! Please and thank you!

Josh, I don't have any antivirus installed yet; the computer is completely clean. All I have installed is Google Chrome...are there any firewall applications I may not know about part of Chrome?

Also, I booted into Safe Mode with Networking and plugged in my Wireless Adapter. When I was in Normal Mode, plugging in the wireless adapter changed the ethernet connection with an X on it into a limited wifi icon. In Safe Mode, the wifi icon never showed up...but when I clicked the ethernet connection icon it still pulled up available wireless networks. I tried connecting to my home network but no luck.

Booted back into Normal Mode and ran the troubleshooter again. Now it's telling me "The DNS server isn't responding". Last night it was telling me "Wi-Fi does not have a valid IP configuration".

What is the exact make/model of the USB wireless adapter? This issue does seem to indicate to a driver issue however it could be a setting on your router. Do you know what authentication type your router is using? WEP, WPA2? AES or TKIP?

Windows 8 does have issues with older wireless standards.

If your machine is a clean install then you should only have Windows Firewall and Defender active. These should not mess with connectivity so I am confident they aren't the issue

If you can post a new ipconfig /all I can see if the IP configuration has changed at all...

Many Thanks,
Josh :)

Still an invalid IP address :(. Checked their website for appropriate drivers and it appears to have no drivers for vista, 7 or 8. When trying on a different machine, what was the OS of that machine? Also how did you install the current driver?

To remove any possibilities of the firewall being the issue can you follow this tutorial to temporarily disable the firewall. Once done please reboot the machine and test connectivity

Article

Are you able to test connectivity on a different wireless network? Possibly a friend or relatives? Neighbors? This can greatly help us determine if your router is the cause or if it is indeed a driver issue

Many Thanks,
Josh :)

I've used the adapter before with my Windows 7 laptop at my friend's house (something about my laptop's wireless adapter and my friend's wireless network did not work together). I Google'd a driver on my laptop, put it on USB, and moved it to my new desktop. Unfortunately, I think the driver was for Windows 7. Can't seem to find one for Windows 8.

Just tried again with Windows Firewalls off, still didn't work.

One more thing. I had a friend over yesterday who had a pretty new Windows 8 laptop. She pulled up my wireless network, put in the password, and had the same problem I'm having now. We couldn't get it to work but her laptop had a function to connect by pressing a button on the router. Unfortunately, there's no such function for my desktop...but this kind of leads me to believe that the problem may have more to do with the router, since the wireless adapter on her laptop has been working fine elsewhere. Well it could be that or insufficient drivers or both :(

What is the make/model of the router? The information in your post above leads me to suspect that you will probably need a firmware upgrade in order to fully support Windows 8. Especially if it has affected other Windows 8 machines. This is a common issue that pops up quite bit from users and router manufacturers have been releasing updates in order to fix this.

I highly doubt it would be a driver issue for both however I cannot comment for your network adapter. Typically Windows 7 drivers are supported for Windows 8 but they aren't perfect.

I use a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router model# WNDR3400

Yeah I've been reading a lot of other posts about Wi-Fi troubles after upgrading to Windows 8. I actually upgraded my router's firmware to the latest version last night. Did not resolve the issue.

At this point the main two things we're considering is the router and the wireless adapter, is that correct? Kinda sucks there are two variables, so it's hard to identify/resolve the problem. I could go out and buy a new wireless adapter (the one I'm using right now is borrowed), but that may not even resolve the issue. Are there any other factors that may be involved here?

Correct, after upgrading the firmware have you been able to test on any other Windows 8 machines via wireless?

If there was a driver available then that could help us narrow it down. I am certain that it is not an application at all so please feel free to enable the firewall again.

I'll see if I can get someone to review this and get their opinion on the situation ;)

Yeah Windows firewall probably isn't the problem; I've turned it back on now.

Thanks for your help, Josh. I wish Windows 8 didn't make this so much harder than it should be  hopefully someone knows what the problem is here.

No worries, normally this is caused by a software issue however your issue is definitely unique. You should receive a response within 24 hours. If not I will try and continue with this and look into other possible causes.

The mini USB adaptor is a bit of a relic there chief and driver support is dismal for that one. That is the most likely problem here.

I'd say the easy fix is to use a more up to date USB adaptor.

There are much faster wireless N versions and so inexpensive from Amazon.

Most people are unaware that by updating all of the older wireless G client/devices then you could also run the much faster 802.11n Only setting on the router, this is the only way to achieve true wireless n speeds. :dinesh:

Yes I'm planning on purchasing a new one anyway, but how can I be sure that the new adapter I purchase will be compatible with Windows 8? Sorry I don't know much about wireless adapters, but I did read that N Series ones are the fastest. Are you just suggesting I purchase a more recent model?

Guys, I bought a more up-to-date wireless adapter that says "supports windows 8" on the box. I installed it and have successfully connected to my wireless network!

I guess something about Windows 8 just wasn't compatible with the older wireless adapter..it's not that old so I don't know why. Windows 8 has been out long enough..I hope I won't be facing more incompatibility issues anytime soon!

Anyhow, thanks for all the help guys! Really meant a lot
