So my computer will not boot up and I am directly taken to the advanced options page, can I buy a Windows xp disc and rollback the registry or can I buy a later disk and does the type of computer matter?
I was going to use this tutorial:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rVZe8YYkH4E

I have an Asus Notebook PC
Intel Inside
Windows 8.1
4GB ram
X551M

Please mind my lack of knowledge and poor explanation, I do not usually encounter these sorts of issues. Your help is GREATLY appreciated

What is the need for installing WinXP? All support for it was discontinued back in April 2014. Looking at ASUS site shows it probably came with Win8 or maybe Win8.1. If you did not make the backup set of discs when prompted you'd be better off trying to get a set of discs from ASUS. But you could look on the Internet for a copy of Win8.1, most likely only the OEM version now available in the supply channels. It's usually not possible to use discs from a different brand computer, usually coded to prevent that.

More about using WinXP, it's doubtful you would be able to find drivers for the various functions of the motherboard. Lots had been changed between WinXP and Win8.1 with Win7 and Win8 between them. If it were my Notebook I'd get Win8.1 running, update it then get the free Win10 Upgrade. Actually, I have 5 Notebooks I've done it with, only 1 was new to me and the others are Notebooks I've rescued with either new hard drives or 1 with a new display panel.

First of all thank you for your quick response time. So.. you're saying get an 8.1 disc for that brand of computer, would that be a guaranteed fix to my booting problem?
This was my other post to explain it better

"Hello I'm Timothy, My Asus laptop is not booting up and directly takes me to the blue screen with "Choose an option". I attempted to reset it and I keep getting errors saying a problem occurred and couldn't complete the task. I have no images, discs, or restore points to roll back to, I've tried Sfc scannow multiple times and every time it says it has fixed problems and will appear on next reboot every time I use it.( I should also note that it does this fairly fast as it's known to take a pretty long time) Startup repair fails taking me back to the blue screen, as does refreshing it saying a problem has occurred like in the reset. I'm hoping there's some hope for me? Maybe some command prompt tricks or UEFI settings, you guys are my only hope, thank you all for your help"

The computer needs to be restored to it factory or as-shipped condition, easiest way is to try to get the discs to do so. During setup there's usually a prompt to create those discs, if not done then communication with the brand will be necessary. Or you could buy a copy and install that. With Win7 and earlier you get a Product Key with the disc, Win8/8.1 changes things and I don't know if you will need a Product Key or not, some seem to be built-in whether in the BIOS or the OS itself.

Communication with the brand.. So I should get a disk ordered by contacting Asus is what you're telling me? And the buying a copy option confuses me, a copy of win 8.1?

"Buying a copy" simply means a purchase of your own copy of Windows. And Yes, I have obtained the discs from the manufacturer of the machine a number of times when a client needed them.

Sorry for recapping just making sure.. So buying a copy of win 8.1 isn't that reliable since it may not work because it's coded, but it might how?

*im just on a learning adventure thanks so much

It will work, just may not have all the necessary drivers and won't have all the so-called bloatware that come with new computers. Win8.1 does support a lot of hardware but there'll always be something it won't have.

Ok well I can't get on my computer to get that download but I miraculously found an old laptop Windows 7 that works i used the little charge I had and cleared a whopping 1.5gb of data then realized I have no charger for it so I have to get one of those, then work from there.
