Hi,

If you want to control remotely a PC I would use Teamviewer app instead of any other. It works on HTTP layer, meaning you can save router table updates, etc etc. and it usually works fine. That would be my first option.

Go to the System screen (Windows key + pause/break key) and click on Remote Settings on the left. I think you'll find that you can't remote desktop in unless you have Pro installed. You can remote desktop out, just not in. I'm running 8.1 (non pro) on my laptop and there is no "Allow remote desktop connections into this PC" option shown. That's with Windows built in functions, you may still be able to do it with third party programs.

Teamviewer also doesn't care which version of Windows 8.1 you are running, either. I used to recommend LogMeIn, but it isn't free anymore. Teamviewer seems to be the best free alternative.

As it says under Windows->Edition in your post, you have "Windows 8.1" which doesn't support acting as a host for RDP. If you had Pro the edition would show as "Windows 8.1 Pro".

I also recommend TeamViewer which is free for personal use. Very easy to install and get working. Installer Windows version of TeamViewer on your laptop and the TeamViewer app on your phone.

Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
Very easy to install and get working. Installer Windows version of TeamViewer on your laptop and the TeamViewer app on your phone.
Teamviewer can also be run as a portable version without installing anything, just selecting "Run only (one time use)" xD
