Solved Built-into-windows Onedrive won't work

Hi Everyone,

My friend has an Asus laptop and he had some problems with his keyboard. So he sent it to Asus for repairs and what he got back was a perfectly fine laptop with an erased disk drive. So he had Windows 8.1 re-installed but one of the things he noticed was that his One drive application which is built-into windows 8.1 did not sync. The application would not run and the folder at file explorer would not give him the option to sync. He tried to run the application but every time he tried it showed up for a split second in task-manager and disappear. And since it's an built-into-windows feature we cannot get it re-installed without refreshing his pc and deleting all his applications for the second time. So we were looking for a way to re-instal or repair One drive without having to refresh or re-install windows.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the reply's, but our problem is the desktop application that's built into windows, and not the Metro app. We have tried a full pc refresh but unfortunately the problems keep showing up. Now we have the ability to sync One drive via File Explorer but it gives us the error: ....

It feels like it's a time-out error because it keeps loading and loading and it takes a little while until it shows up. And this is not a slow laptop we're dealing with. When we run Skydrive.exe it still showes up for a split second at task manager but ends up disappearing.

I don't have the .exe version, so I'll be limited with help.

A timeout error may be due to a slow internet connection. If not already, you may want to check that.

when you run the exe, what does it show as the name for it (if you have time to read it)

It should show as OneDrive Sync Engine, just wondering if you somehow have the old version that was designed for 8.0

I am confused when you say the folder in file explorer does not give the option to sync, the ability to sync a folder in file explorer as far as I know was the way it was done in 8.0, you could sync any folder, in 8.1 it only syncs the files/folders stored under OneDrive and gives you the options of Online Only or Available Offline

Again, thanks for the reply's. We were struggling with the issue some more the last couple of days, browsed the internet for more solutions but everything did just not work. So we decided we would reset his pc right back to factory settings to solve the problem. and that did! So the problem got solved!

Hi there. So as to get this correct > When you say he had W8.1 reinstalled after the keyboard fix, was it from OEM recovery media or partition, or W8.1 fresh install?

Uhmm, i guess it was windows 8.1 fresh install. We had multiple options of how refresh the laptop, and we chose the most firm one.

The reason I ask is that 80 to 90% of system problems stem from faulty or old drivers. Not an absolute, but now that you have reset to factory settings (assuming from the OEM partition or media) it now has all the proper drivers. A lot of times Windows will load some generic MS drivers. I'd guess this was the problem.

Keep in mind that along with physical devices there are also virtual ones with their drivers in 8.x. This is prevalent these days.

All in all, I'm glad you got it fixed.
