windows 8.1 64bit

A notebook's display was flickering and sent for repair. When shipping the webcam worked.
After getting the notebook back, the webcam does not work. The microphone
next to the webcam works.

The repair consisted in getting a new display cable. I assume the webcam's cables
are part of the cable which got renewed.

My suspicion is, something about the repair made the webcam
stop working.

Some settings or driver I should check on in
windows 8.1 which may have made
the webcam stop working?

I have opened the camera application in windows 8.1. The
message says, to get started connect a camera.
In devices and printers the webcam is not displayed.
If I connect an usb webcam it works in the camera
application and is displayed in devices and printers.

Windows 8.1 is updated. If I install the webcam's
driver, it says no appropriate driver to be
installed.

Thanks.

The first thing you should do is reinstall the camera's driver. This will be the easiest thing to do. Go into Device Manager and see if the camera's driver is installed, or if it has an error marker next to it. Right-click on the camera listing, and tell it to reinstall the driver. It will search on the internet for the correct driver.

If that doesn't fix it, then it is also possible that the technician may have bumped the wire connected to the camera, causing it to come unplugged. Or maybe he disconnected it in order to do the repair and forgot to reconnect it. You will need to bring it back to the repair shop for that.

I use Samba to share my data drive with the other computers at my house.
My bet is that the repair tech forgot to re-connected the camera after the repair or, as mrjimphelps suggested, bumped it loose.

You stated that the laptop was sent in for repair so I guess you didn't take it to a local shop? You could try disassembling the laptop yourself (there are disassembly instructions for most laptops on the internet, try searching for them for your laptop) and see if you can locate the loose or disconnected cable. If you aren't technically enough inclined to do that then perhaps a local shop will do it for you and not charge an arm and a leg. Of course, if possible, return it to the place that repaired the screen flicker and have them fix the issue they caused.
