BSOD using x264.exe after ~5-45 minutes 0x00000139

KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE is the error it gives. Running Windows 8 (not 8.1. no, I'm not upgrading until they come out with that update in August to bring back the start menu =p)

Basically, when encoding video with x264.exe, this happens after 5-45 minutes. I've tried different ram, I've reset my processor clock speeds to stock--same error. What is going on? This only happens with this program and not other encoding programs like xvid, etc. Attached is the file as requested.

I'm suspecting a bad OS install, bad power supply, or a faulty processor.

Help.

So I got this in my email inbox today... I'm pretty sure it's not AMD graphics drivers. Guess he deleted his post.

Anyone else got ideas?

Only 130 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

C: and H: drives only have about 4% free space. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

You have 2 or 3 hard drives (plus a couple of USB's). What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

These devices have problems in Device Manager:
Not Available USB\VID_03F0&PID_0401\SG955172MFHT The drivers for this device are not installed.
Not Available USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\6&38A36D0C&0&1 43
High Definition Audio Bus PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_AA80&SUBSYS_AA801002&REV_00\6&B283911&0&01400009 This device is disabled.
The first items is a HP ScanJet; the second is likely to be your USB 3.0 controller (but that's uncertain as the VID and PID characters aren't correct). The last one is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

Lot's of Live Kernel Events in the WER section of MSINFO32. PLease:
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

MSI Afterburner (along with Riva Tuner and EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install them immediately!

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Thanks for the reply. I will give these things a try. I have indeed confirmed that this is something wrong with my OS installation presently. I put a blank hard drive in (unplugged my normal boot drive) and did a clean install of windows 8.1. No more bluescreen. So I'm going to go back to my original ssd and try the things you have suggested.

Edit: I'm also going to make the jump and upgrade to 8.1 on my normal install. Microsoft recently announced that they are going to drop support for 8.0, 8.1 (without update 1) on May 9th (iirc).

Edit2: Since you asked, I have a 1200W Corsair AX1200 (the old one, not AX1200i)

If you suspect OS corruption, try this:
Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

FYI - I have repaired systems using the last command even though problems weren't found with the first 2 - so I suggest running them all.

From this article: Repair a Windows Image

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

I just wanted to say that I have solved the problem! I ended up doing an upgrade install with a MSDN Windows 8.1 Pro with update installation DVD, which reset/uninstalled all drivers. After installing all of the latest drivers from AMD's and ASUS's websites, I was up and running. No more bluescreens. I'm able to encode video with x264.exe again with no problems whatsoever.

Before I originally posted on this forum, I had tried sfc /scannow and a dism command similar to one of the ones you mentioned. Neither had worked, but maybe I had not used the right dism commands.

Thanks for all the help.

tl;dr The fix for this problem was to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro with update.
