BSOD and/or Display Driver Errors While Gaming

Hello, I have recently (end of August) purchased an ASUS G46VW. At first it was performing well, and it still does, except for when the display crashes. When I play games that aren't very graphics-intensive, such as Minecraft or League of Legends, the display rarely crashes, and the video card performs well. However, during these games it is rare, but possible, that I encounter an error. When I play more graphics-intensive games, such as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the errors are more frequent.

Occasionally the game will stop for a few moments, then resume after notifying me of an error.
Other times, it will either cause the game to stop responding (still allowing me to do other things), or it can cause the entire laptop to lock up, forcing me to do a hard restart.

Usually the errors say "...has stopped responding and has recovered."
Sometimes, it's "...has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware."
And on other occasions, I get a BSOD that is usually PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA with nvlddmkm as the file in parentheses.

The laptop is barely one month old. I've tried installing the newest graphics drivers, but they don't seem to help. I've system restored a couple times, and usually that seems to make the problem less frequent, but so far nothing I've done has solved the problem.

Please help, and thanks in advance!

Laptop Model: ASUS G46VW
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M - 2GB
Processor: Intel Core i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 8.00 GB (7.89 GB usable)
System Type: 64-bit OS, x64-based processor

Only 78 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have up to 100 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

MSINFO32 is corrupted, please:
MSINFO32:
Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

If you're having difficulties with the format, please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type (or copy/paste) "msinfo32 /nfo %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\TEST.NFO" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to Desktop to retrieve the TEST.NFO file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back. Then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

DeathAdder mouse driver dating from 2007 is a likely cause of BSOD's. Please remove it, then update to the latest, Win8 compatible version.

Run video stress tests (from here: Hardware Diagnostics ) to help rule out a hardware problem with the video card.

Be sure to use the laptop on a hard surface (preferably with a cooling fan) in order to prevent overheating of the video card.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I updated the Deathadder driver using Razer Synapse 2.0, and I updated AiCharger.sys from the ASUS download page. I don't know why I have a Lenovo Utility, or how I would go about properly updating it.
As for atkwmiacpi64.sys, I only see downloads for ATKACPI from the ASUS page, so I didn't download anything for that.

Attached are the .nfo and .txt files from msinfo32.exe.

Don't worry about the other drivers for now.
Now we wait and see if the BSOD's come back.
If they do, please do the following 3 things:

1) If the system gives more BSOD's, please zip up and upload the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump directory.

2) Please perform these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics Also monitor the temps on your system using a free temperature monitoring utility (I use this one: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting )

3) Please provide the following info, as the WER section of MSINFO32 shows many, many Live Kernel Events (which "may" be associated with hardware issues):
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

So far no BSOD, but the display driver errors are still rampant while playing Final Fantasy XIV.
I'll run the diagnostics, but for now I've uploaded the Minidump and Admin Events.

Still no BSOD, but Windows Updates seem to have updated my Nvidia video card drivers by a version or two.
I'm happy about not having BSODs, but that had always seemed to be a less persistent issue than my main gripe about the display drivers constantly crashing while playing games.

I had tried previously to update my Nvidia drivers to their latest version, and it hadn't helped in the slightest, so I ended up trying a system restore, and that only served to temporarily alleviate the problem.

I tried a couple of the stress tests. They didn't seem to heat my hardware up to abnormal levels--during the FurMark tests my GPU maxed out at around 85 degrees celsius, and using Prime95 the CPU was about the same, more or less.

I can never get my laptop to boot from this USB after loading Memtest on it. I used the Seagate Seatools hard drive fixer thing, and it didn't seem to detect any errors.

Yet still, I'll start up Final Fantasy XIV, play for a short time (sometimes even a whole few hours without fault, sometimes not even a few minutes), and then the graphics will stop. The sound will bug out for a short while, making a buzzing noise, then the music will resume, and either the game graphics will have been restored, or I get a black screen in the game window and I have to close the client because it won't respond.

All the while, my system tray notifications are popping up, "Nvidia etc. has stopped responding and has recovered."

This usually happens in an area with a lot of people, but occasionally it happens randomly out in the field.

Other than gaming, my computer is fine, but that's one of my main uses of the computer. Not to mention it's a gaming laptop... I'm just really frustrated that a new computer would do this, and after so much troubleshooting I have yet to come up with a cause, let alone a solution.

Just got another BSOD. Tried playing Minecraft, it froze after a minute or two and wouldn't let me end the task, so I attempted to restart and my whole computer froze and eventually blue screened.

It was DHP_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION this time, however.

I've attached my Minidump from rebooting my computer right after the BSOD.

From your posts this is looking like a video card problem - but let's look at the reports to confirm it.
FYI - the "Display driver stopped responding..." thing in the system tray is actually a STOP 0x117 error that's "technically" a BSOD since it generates the error code in kernel mode. If the display driver wasn't able to recover, then it'd generate a STOP 0x116 BSOD (a real BSOD).

Lot's of display and display related errors in the Admin.evtx log

The memory dumps also point at video drivers. This means (IME) that it's most likely either:
- the video drivers
- the video card (hardware)

As there is mention of hal.dll in the stack text, I tend to suspect the video card and not the drivers. But the way to prove this is to remove the old drivers and install a new, freshly downloaded set of the latest, Win8 compatible drivers to test with. You can also run video stress test (such as those listed on this page: Additional Hardware Diagnostics ) in order to see if it causes issues with the video card.

Here are more troubleshooting tips for TDR timeout issues (which all of your errors seem to be): Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums

So, after uninstalling Nvidia Graphics Driver 311.44, restarting, then uninstalling the Nvidia Graphics Driver 306.XX (which had come with the laptop and reappeared after uninstalling 311.44), I installed a clean copy of the 320.49 drivers from Nvidia's website.

Played some Final Fantasy XIV, game ran perfectly for a few hours until I got to a new area, and as soon as I walked into the new area, the display went out again. Didn't have to restart my computer.

Started to test my computer with Memtest G80.
First test using default settings--worked.
Second test using settings of 1024 MB and 100 iterations--failed with a huge number string count of errors.
Subsequent tests, even the default ones, would produce errors as well. FurMark also started to cause errors, where it hadn't when I ran it previously. All these errors were the "stopped responding and has recovered" errors.

Temperatures during Final Fantasy and Memtest G80 did not exceed 80 Celsius (Monitored using CPUID HWMonitor), and the voltage was at a constant 0.912-0.937 V.

EDIT: Just ran default test again after typing this post. The card successfully did about 25 or so iterations, and then failed again.

I opened the registry and navigated to the directory \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{**a series of numbers that are different**}\0000

However, in none of the 0000 did files called "PerfLevelSrc" or "PowerMizer..." exist. Does that mean it's not on my computer?

Miraculously, I uninstalled the newest drivers, reset, uninstalled the 310.XX drivers that were leftover, reset, and then got 306.XX drivers (the default ones that came with the computer, I believe) and I've been playing FFXIV for at least 6 hours now without any graphical errors.

...I swear I've rolled them back that far and it hadn't done anything before.

EDIT: Apparently I've had no errors because currently I'm using the integrated graphics card to play games... Go figure.

The day before yesterday I had a computer at work that wouldn't install software (access denied errors in Event Viewer).
I verified the errors multiple times and even showed them to other techs.
Then I left the system alone for an hour or two.
I came back and the software had installed!!!
Go figure!

I would double check that you are using the integrated graphics and play again using them.
Once you've verified that there's no error - then switch to the discrete graphics (with the current drivers)
Then see if that has fixed it.

If not, then try the most updated drivers
If it still doesn't fix it, then we've gotta figure that it may be a hardware problem.
You may want to try:
- our Graphics Card forums: Graphic Cards - Windows 8 Forums
- the Asus ROG forums (I've seen previous issues with video cards in Asus gaming systems)
- the nVidia forums for more advanced troubleshooting

Good luck!

If any of those other sites can find a solution, we'd appreciate it if you'd post a link to it here.
Thanks!
