I don't know what they are called and the title for the thread was limited so sorry for the broken English but

after windows 8 forced the windows 8.1 update, all text in firefox went weirdly small but that isn't as annoying as what happens in the pictures,

any icon on the taskbar that I right click on brings up a box as usual but the bottom part of it is broken and weird, any idea how to make it not like this?

there is a custom theme installed and it is a 64-bit operating system

Did you try switch to a standard theme temporarily and see if it happens than ?
If you are using an MS driver for GPU, it might have installed another one which changed some video settings.

I did just now switch to a normal theme and it does go back to normal, but any custom theme at all and it goes weird again, I have no idea what MS driver for GPU means but I would like to have it working again, thanks for the quick reply

GPU = Graphical Processor Unit or in plain words "Video Card". May I suppose you know what drivers are ? They may come from MS (Microsoft) or video cards manufacturer. Ones from MS are usually just very basic drivers without too many options for setting picture right so video card manufacturer's ones are preferable. You can find which card and which driver is installed for it in: Control Panel > Device Manager > Display adapters.

oh yeah, I knew what GPU was, I just didn't know what MS for GPU meant. http://puu.sh/cMcg2/dd6bfe4e2b.png is what mine is, windows 8.1 changed a ton of names around so I had to use a different method to find it but I still got it. my computer was a custom built thing so I don't think it is microsoft drivers?

Yeah, it's MS's drivers alright. Newest drivers fr your GPU you can find here: Download Drivers
I suggest you use manual method and download no newer than v14.4 drivers. If you want to know more about your GPU, you can download and use: GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

so downloading the newest driver would fix this?
I'm not sure if it would help that problem but installing 14.4 should help with slew of other things, like being able to set resolution, picture video etc to better suit your needs and liking and definitely speed up eventual games or 3D programs. Driver you get will be in .EXE format and guide you to easy install. But again, suggest you use GPU-Z to find exactly what you have.
