Tutorial updated for the new Bing Desktop 1.3.395.0 version. :)

What I'm trying to do is the following: Update the desktop background and lock screen image with the bing picture of the day. I don't want to have the bing desktop app running all day just for this task that needs to be done once overnight. Would you know how to go about this?

Hello meth,

The Bing app doesn't use much of anything while it's sitting idle waiting to update the background image on a schedule.

I suppose that you could manually turn on/off changing the background in the Bing app.
