Best Buy to open hundreds of Windows stores within its ...

[h=1]stores[/h]
Microsoft has cut a deal to open Windows stores within 500 Best Buy locations in the United States and 100 more Best Buy and Future Shop locations in Canada.
The store-within-a-store sites, which will be 1,500 square feet to 2,200 square feet, will offer a wide selection of Windows tablets and PCs, Windows Phones, Microsoft Office, and Xbox consoles. There will also be space set aside specifically for Microsoft's Surface tablet computers.
The deal also calls for more than 1,200 Best Buy sales staff to receive Microsoft training, in addition to the Microsoft specialists already on staff at Best Buy.

M$ getting worried or running scared?

This is great news! The biggest name in software and now hardware should have their own store and if not, these stores within a store are the next best thing.

MS needs this reach for it's new lineup and there is no stopping this machine as it's about to be turned up quite a bit.

MS is not your friend. Why are you so excited?

It may turn out to be a good thing.

I have posted before encouraging MS to do much more in making and peddling their own devices.

Stevie B has gone for it. Let us see how this pans out.

Hopefully something can come around and make Best Buy exciting again. I shop there from time to time, but it's getting less and less as time goes on.

I hate not having local electronics places. Most mom and pop computer shops are gone. ABC Warehouses don't hardly sell computer stuff anymore. Circuit City is gone. CompUSA is gone. OfficeMax and OfficeDepot have very small selections. I don't always want to buy stuff online, but it's becoming my only choice.

Hi there
Shopping in Physical stores is a HORRIBLE experience these days.

You are made to feel like a criminal even as you approach the store and then checking out makes Airport Security seem like an absolute breeze by comparison. Then the goods are usually totally inappropriately displayed -- for instance I like to see what sort of CONNECTORS are on a monitor / TV e.g number of HDMI connectors, where they are positioned, AV connectors etc. But you need to go on excruciating Neck bending exercises to get access to this info and all the time you are browsing you are rentlessly persued by Sales staff asking you "Can I help you please" every 2 mins no matter how many times you shoo them away. Security staff are always hovering around too. Mind you as a BIG blond guy a couple of aggressive stares back at 3 tiny phillipino guards hovering around usually scares them away. !!! Then if they still don't move a sort of " I fancy you" type of look really makes them scarper away like rats !!!.

Perversely when you actually WANT somebody there's never anybody around.

Finally when you do reach the checkout only ONE of the 17 cash points is open, the Chinese woman in front of you seems to have endless problem with her credit card and then when it's finally your turn you are also plagued with offers for "Extended Warranties" and pointless offers for 3rd party Anti Virus Software.

The Modern "Bricks and Mortar" superstore can't die quick enough IMO. The only physical stores I go into now are the old "Mom and Pop" type or the old fashioned corner store. For the rest - You can't blame the decline on Online shopping -- you've just basically KILLED the whole shopping experience.

(This type of shopping experience is WORST in the UK -- in the USA it's there but not so obviously present - and the cash points are always adequately manned --"Take the money" --Business 101. Belgium is passably OK -- found no real problems in FNAC or Media Markt in Central Brussels while Germany and Holland - experience is similar to the UK but not quite as bad, Germany has another problem - finding times when shops are actually OPEN for trading is quite a challenging exercise).

So I don't think Ms is going to make a huge amount of extra money by having a physical presence in these types of stores.

In Iceland there aren't that many stores - and as people tend to come from small communities this type of problem is Non existent

This Store is one of the FEW exceptions and is a PLEASURE to use -- anybody visiting Iceland needing technical gear this is a great store (and they all speak perfect English too).

I hear you about shopping here and feel much the same. It's a shame those stores you mention went out of business, especially the Mom and Pops where one gets personal service. A lot of competition I guess. Looks like Best Buy won out but, I would think if they don't do something quick they'll be out too. Perhaps it's the Geek Squad to keep them alive?!

We have one of the smaller Best Buys here in town. Sales staff is absolutely horrible. Ask a question and they're on the horn asking the only one in the store that does know > Their supervisor or store manager. Lol! Meanwhile one waits. Not good.

Although shopping online is convenient and often more reasonably priced, A brick and mortar store is good so far as seeing the product, hands-on experience with it, and buy it instantly. Something an online store just can't produce.

I think this store within a store idea is excellent. MS has more control to educate consumers of their products. I think it will not only boost sales for themselves, but for Best Buy also.

So far is Mom and Pop stores go > Expensive proposition to open one and keep it alive. Why with all the laws, regulations, building codes, taxes, etc., it's hard to compete with corporations. Walmart being the worst offender IMO. They come into town and absolutely kill off the small guy and ruin in the local economy. I'm not saying it's just them. A lot of corporations do it.

As a builder, I see less and less lumber yards that sells quality materials and one gets personal service. I see more corporate home centers that sell crap and hardly any service. Namely Home-de-poor and Mean-ards. :p

This is not to say all corporations are evil, but it sure seems like they're taking over this country. Malls and strip malls > The American blight IMO.

I could go on, but rant over. :D

Can you really blame them, though? I'm a full time engineer and part time developer. You're a builder, which you work with computers a lot, yes? In fact, most people here on this forum are professionals of some kind. The sales guys at best buy are high school graduates. How on Earth do we expect them to know more than us?

When I enter these stores, I tend to keep my questions limited to where something is and if they have xyz.

Even the geek squad guys don't know as much as you'd like to think. One time a colleague of mine had trouble with his laptop. Basically speaking, whenever he moved the windows around they don't move with his mouse cursor anymore. The outline just moved and then the window materialized where he dropped off the outline. He called geek squad and they sent someone over. The geek squad guy insisted that he needed to reinstall windows, which they wanted to charge $200.

I happened to have dropped by at that time to pick up something. I asked him if I could try "fixing" it. He said sure. I went into the animation property and changed it. Problem solved.

Just sayin'. You'll be much more happy with these stores and their employees if you lessen your expectations.

It is an interesting move.

To borrow from Coke Robot, MS are once again "copying" from Apple. This time they are going to try and swamp them.

It might also help stop the oems from rebelling. What else can MS do to keep the lid on it. They are paying platform subsidies, reducing license fees, spending a fortune on advertising, and now promoting the oem products in stores alongside their own, it appears.

It might work for MS. Tim has a couple of surprises up his sleeve - we shall see what happens.

I was listening to the Windows Weekly podcast, and apparently the MS stores are going to be basically "the computer dept" going forward in these best buy stores. The Apple areas and the Samsung areas are going to be "pushed out" along the sides of the store. So, the MS stuff is going to be prominent front and center with Apple taking a backseat. Apparently MS paid a small fortune to Best Buy for this opportunity.

I too like this idea.

I see it as MS reconnecting with the consumer in a more direct manner, that has been lost over the long term. Hopefully they will have MS MVPs staffing the counters that are truly experts and in the same vein if not better than the Fruit Company "geniuses" LOL.

Hate brick and mortar stores all you want, HOWEVER, they offer the consumer a good opportunity to actually see feel touch and use the item they are considering purchasing which simply will NEVER be replicated with online purchasing.

Best Buy has been going downhill for a long time now, but it seems like the founder is finally interesting in taking the reigns again and making it a place you want to shop at.

I like the fact that if I buy something expensive and have a problem with it I can simply take it back for service or a refund without all the mail/shipping hassle.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Best Buy is probably not the best Distrib they could have chosen - Their Geek Squad is INEPT and the subject of MANY lawsuits. I have heard many horror stories of people bringing their PCs in for problems that could have been easily fixed by me for less than 40 bucks, and they were charged over 300 bucks for works that was not even done. In one case, a professional shopper was made to buy a new hard drive, and they were charged about 300 bucks. They tried to give him a different original hard drive back, one that WAS bad, but it wasn't his. The Computer was brought in with something rigged to be easily fixed by any legit Tech, the person who "repaired" the PC never even tried to use that method, which was something like the simple restoration of a system file or something.

That Microsoft chose this company to host their stores is ALARMING to say the least. It is evidence of Unethical Behaviour- Microsoft has already generally lied to the general purchasing public about the "official" amount of actual versions of Windows 8 being used in the world.

I think it is evidence of desperation on MS's part - And that Windows 8 is possibly suffering even worse sales than is being let on. I understand why a company wold do this, to try to save a Product, but in my opinion, only HONEST methods will work. MS should come clean with the actual number of machines which are calling for updates, and I guarantee that this number is sufficiently less than 100 Million. They admit this, and then release 8.1 WITH a Working and Windows 7 style Start Menu, their customers WILL come flocking back in droves.

But someone at MS who is deciding what features they will PUSH is refusing to listen to what the public WANTS. Microsoft needs to realise that Windows 8 has failed, Officially - Just like Vista failed officially. MS's response to the Vistdebacle was Windows 7. If they release Windows 8.1 without attending to these major complaints, they could possibly go out of business.

And this worries me, is there some political agenda going on with Windows 8? Microsoft seems to want to guarantee a No-Sale release of Windows.

At this point I have absolutely no interest in 8.1 - I think I'll wait for the next release. I'll stick with what I got and I'll install Windows 7 in even more machines, and still try to get at least ONE of my clients to install 8... But I have offered at least 25 times and it has been a solid "No WAY" across the board.

M$ getting worried or running scared?

This is exactly what I mean when I say people who have a negative experience with a product tend to exaggerate and do everything to tell the world they hate the product.

Apple opens up a store and it's so cool. Samsung opens up a store in BB and wow it's a good strategy. But MS opening up a store in BB and it's doom and gloom.

Nuff said.

They don't like certain aspects of windows 8, and so they tell everyone that all of windows 8 is crap and that their dogs died because of it. Everything MS does now will reinforce this. And it's like they don't have a job, since they spend all their time calling one press conference after another telling people how much they hate MS and win8.

It's getting beyond annoying.

Well, in this case it is Beast Buy, not Microsoft. They use all manner of unethical selling practices.

I went there to buy INK for a Lexmark. For an old printer, so the cartridges are usually a lot less then new cartridges, which can be as high as 60 bucks for a black ink cartridge. I found one in the SALE bin, marked down to 9 bucks. It SAID 9 bucks on it. They tried to charge me 60 bucks for it. Geek Squad uses the same unethical practices to dredge MONEY from people who don't have it. They charge at least 3 times as much for Hardware, Hard Drives and Video Cards. The place is BAD, BAD BAD.
