I have an ATI Radeon 9200 display adapter. My monitor is a DELL 24 inch monitor which supports resolutions upto 1920x1080. But I cannot set any resolution higher than 1024x768.

When I try to update the driver, it says:

The best driver software for your device is already installed

Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

What can I do to set a higher resolution to make Windows 8 usable here?

Hi,

Must upgrade card to any HD line or revert to using Windows 7. (The ATI Radeon X series will work too, but no sense getting one of these when HD are very cheap already by now.)

While the XP driver can be installed with special techniques, it will not produce sufficient acceleration on 8 at all. Basically, the default Windows 8 driver you're using now is the best you can get for 8.

(To fafhrd: Although this is not a laptop, this is the one exception (too old video) about hardware not working well on 8, heh heh. :) However, will work on 7 fine with XP driver - just no Aero.)

To OP: Check that your power supply can supply enough power and also has an available internal connection, if necessary for a new card you select. It can even be molex connector if you get converter with new card, that sometimes comes with it. Then look at stuff like this for example, if you have AGP bus: Used Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon HD 3850 11124-00-20R AGP Video Card 840777024485 | eBay )

Since you really have nothing to lose, you can try to install this using the device manager. It might not even install without editing the .inf file - but even if it does, like I said, it isn't going to do anything well for you at all:
