ASUS N56JR Notebook BSOD PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Hi there! I posted here a couple of weeks ago because I had a problem with my ASUS N56JR notebook which gave me a lot of blue screens. It ended with me sending my notebook in for RMA. ASUS switched out my HDD and sent the notebook back to me. It took about 10 minutes after starting it before I got a new BSOD. I got bought some new RAM sticks but that didn't help either. I have quite a lot of minidumps and I thought I'd come here again and see if we can figure this out.

So the BSOD's mainly appears when I play games. If I use my NVIDIA card it takes about 2 minutes before my notebook crashes and if I use the integrated graphics the crashes usually takes quite a while longer. Sometimes they don't appear at all.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards

EDIT: The message I get most of the time is PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA but IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL appears quite often too. Whocrashed says the crashes are most likely because of some driver bug but I can't figure out what it is that's causing it.

Your description seems to point to the nVidia graphics card.
This can be a driver problem, an overheating problem, or a broken hardware problem.
For starters please:
- download a fresh copy of the latest Win8 compatible nVidia video drivers from the Asus website
- uninstall the current nVidia drivers from your system
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

More to follow after I look at the reports......

Only 138 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

From the memory dumps it looks like you've already updated the nVidia video drivers (so it's not necessary to do it again).

Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Thanks for your time! It feels like it is some kind of hardware related issue. Not 100% sure what it is though because my GPU doesn't get that hot. Although I suppose that it is something wrong with the GPU since my notebook is completely useless if I run any game with my GPU. It's only my integrated graphics that can run any games but it's not 100% stable then either.

I'll follow your instructions and post here when I'm done.

Thank you again!

No new memory dumps in the Minidump folder? It's more difficult to run the full-sized dump (for me) - I'm a prisoner of my tools!

FWIW - this one was a STOP 0xA that blamed NETIO.sys (a Windows networking driver). It was not a Driver Verifier enabled memory dump (so please continue to run Driver Verifier - let it run for 36 hours continuously).

But, since it did blame networking, let's have a look at those things.
Most often these are caused by the networking drivers - either wired, wireless, bluetooth, or other networking devices
We also see them with programs that are network aware - such as Internet Security applications/firewalls and also with P2P networking programs.

1) remove any Internet Security/firewall programs temporarily. Use Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall while testing.
2) remove any P2P/file sharing programs
3) update all wired/wireless/bluetooth/other networking devices to the latest, Win8 compatible version. If you already have the latest version:
- download a fresh copy of the latest version from the manufacturer's website
- uninstall the version on your system
- install the freshly downloaded version
- monitor for further BSOD's

Then we wait for more memory dumps from Driver Verifier.......

Oh sorry, I'll attach the latest minidump file with this post. I'll have driver verifier running and I'll try the rest of what you've told me when I get back home from school. :)

This might be completely unrelated but since you're mentioning the network I might aswell tell you this anyway. Might help us out.
Before I sent my computer in on RMA every time my computer crashed my room mates would notice that our internet would freak out completely every single time my computer crashed for the duration of the BSOD. If the BSOD would disappear after a couple of seconds then the internet would go back to normal at the same time. But if my computer would be stuck on the BSOD then the internet would be completely unusable until I hard reset my computer.

As I said this might be completely unrelated but I thought it was strange while it was happening.

Thanks again for your time, I'll get back to you once I'm home from school.

Here is another minidump from a BSOD which happened while I was just surfing the web. I usually never have any problems while doing simple tasks on my computer. I had to disable Driver Verifier because I couldn't start my computer after the BSOD. I haven't uninstalled any network drivers yet but will do that soon and I'll enable driver verifier again and get back to you with more dumps, should another BSOD come up.

Thanks!

EDIT: I updated/reinstalled all of the drivers which had something to do with the network but didn't help at all. Had quite a few BSOD's but none of them created a minidump. Was also checking the temperatures when my computer crashed and my CPU was at 70 degrees and my GPU around 64 degrees (celcius) wheh I had CS:GO running.

The last memory dump will not open, the debugger states that the extension might have been changed.
Did you do that? If not, please zip up the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and upload it with your next post.
The purpose of Driver Verifier is to crash the system and generate memory dumps that will help to tell us what's wrong.
Even if Driver Verifier doesn't generate memory dumps, that is significant for our purposes.

The network issues when you have a BSOD is very significant also. Possibly pointing to a hardware problem with your system.

The temps could also be causing this - as 70ºC is way too hot for a CPU. Check the cooling for the CPU and the rest of the system.

Interestingly, the 2 memory dumps from post #7 are Driver Verifier enabled memory dumps.
They point to NETIO.sys and the kernel of the operating system.
This means that it's most likely either a hardware or a Windows problem.

But, as the problems happened before you RMA'd the system - I have to wonder if the connection to the router is to blame.
How do you connect to the router? With a wire? Or with the wireless?
Does this happen if you connect to any other networks?

I didn't change anything that I am aware of but I can upload it again when I get home.

Hmm okay. I don't really know what I can do about the cooling since I would void my warranty if I open up my notebook. There's no dust blocking the vents either. My processor runs at 3.4 due to it being in turbo mode (I have tried changing it down to 2.4 but doesn't help with the BSOD's).

Before the RMA I used wireless but since I got it back I've pretty much only used wired, some BSOD's has occurred when on wireless as well. I haven't tried any other networks but I never had any issues with my laptop before I moved into my new apartment and got our cable from TWC. I'll see what happens if I disconnect my notebook and use it offline.

In case this turns out to be some kind of hardware issue with my notebook I'd like to be as sure as possible (I realize that it might be hard to pin-point the issue) because ASUS doesn't really do a good job with their RMA's and I'd have to be very specific with them with what the issue is before I actually get it resolved, and I have to send it in two more times for RMA before I can get a replacement...

I'll get back to you when I get home from school. Thank you!

Okay so I got home from school and tried to run CS:GO offline without my ethernet cable connected and my computer in airplane mode but that didn't really help either.

I downloaded SpeedFan because you told me that my CPU is running hot but I can't find any fans at all... Very strange. I can feel air coming out from the vent but as far as I can tell it's never increasing in the amount of air coming out. I attach some pictures of the various so that you can see what's going on. I'll also attach my minidump folder.

Thanks!

PS: My notebook is idle in these pictures.

EDIT: Alright I've pretty much given up right now. The BSOD's are only getting worse and occurs more often now. I will probably send my notebook back in to ASUS again. Yay for another three weeks without a computer. Great timing with my school as well... So since they only changed my HDD last time I'm guessing they need quite specific instructions on what they have to do because they don't really seem capable of doing much testing by themselves... Do you have anything specific you can recommend me telling them that they should look at? I was thinking telling them that they should take a look on my GPU as well as my CPU as well as the cooling of my system.

Make sure that the system is blown out with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or a vacuum as they can cause damage to the system).

Try using a laptop cooling pad in order to cool things down.
The temps that you've provided don't seem to be in the 70's - the highest that I saw was 57ºC
It's most likely that the high temps were due to the settings of CS:GO - so I'd use a cooling pad when playing games like that.

I think that the situation with the network is the most significant item here.
The continued problem that is directly associated with the BSOD's is most likely to be the problem.

Ran the last 4 memory dumps (from 12 Mar), 1 was corrupted.

The remaining memory dumps don't blame 3rd party drivers.
They are also of the type that usually respond well to the use of Driver Verifier
Yet, when you ran Driver Verifier, they didn't identify any 3rd party drivers (but one did mention Windows networking).
As such (and IMO) there's 2 possibilities here:
- hardware problem
- Windows problem

Since they replaced your hard drive on the last RMA (this also replace Windows), it's not likely that this is a Windows problem.
That leaves hardware.
I presume it's your networking hardware because of the problems that you have when using the network.

Good luck w/Asus. Unfortunately, it's difficult to pin down a specific problem like this. I'd include as much info about this (maybe include a printout of this topic?) so that the tech who does the testing can figure this out quickly.

Yeah those temperatures were from right after a BSOD, but if I start a game such as CS:GO then it will go up to about 70 degrees,

What i find strange is that if I use my GPU then the notebook crashes after about 1 minute of gameplay but with the integrated graphics it can run smooth for hour or sometimes just crash after 5 minutes (although it always crashes after 1 minute with the dedicated GPU).

I've been in contact with ASUS and they guaranteed me (yeah right, doubt it) that the issue would get resolved the next time I send my notebook in.

I'll send it in to them and keep my fingers crossed that they get it fixed this time.

I'll provide them with detailed instructions on what we've done as well as printing this forum thread and highlighting the imporntant parts (you can never be sure that they actually bother to read it though).

Thank you so much for your help, you've been absolutely awesome. Couldn't be more grateful for your help!

Thanks for the kind words!

In short, if Asus can reproduce the problem (reliably) then they can fix it.
If they can't reproduce it, then they're just (essentially) futzing around replacing parts.

The more info you can give them on how to reproduce the problem, the more likely they are to come up with a fix.

Also, most repair facilities are graded on "Turn-Time" - the time it takes to get a system fixed and back out the door.
This tends to keep troubleshooting limited.
At work we get around this (thanks to an understanding boss), by showing (reproducing) the problem to him.
He still pushes to get it "fixed" quickly - but that's where the sales force overrules the technicians (as I'd gladly spend a month or two troubleshooting a single problem).

Good luck!
