Apps Screen - groupings

On a typical Apps screen, when sorted by Name there are TWO groupings
-a grouping the far left, grouped alphabetically, ( ie a grouping for each of A, B, C etc),
-a grouping on the right side, by program name, displayed alphabetically.

And clicking on any letter or any program group, (or clicking on the triple dots in the bottom right corner) brings up the zoomed out view, which is very nice. Again a group of tiled letters and a group of tiled programs,

But what determines what ends up in which of the two groupings? I had thought it was directly related to what's on the desktop, or pinned the startpage, but its not that simple. What's the basic logic I am missing?

Hello Mediaman, :)

The left side will be a list of modern Windows apps installed from the Store or included in Windows.

The right side will a list of desktop apps (programs) that you installed or included in Windows.

Thanks. I am reading through some of the tutorials to try to clean up the Apps page - not so simple. Apps page is a pain sometime as you dont know when to veer left vs right, given there are two alphabetic groupings ; I end up having to search and type in the name the app - quite ironic for such a visually based operating system.
