How to Turn App Notifications On or Off in Windows 8 and 8.1

Information

Toast notifications in Windows 8 and 8.1 are balloon type notifications that appear as a themed bar in the upper right corner of your main display to allow a Windows Store app to communicate with you whether your are in another app, on the Start screen, on the desktop, or on the lock screen.

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off to show app notifications for all apps in only your user account in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

EXAMPLE: Windows Store App Toast Notification
NOTE: This is an example toast notification on the desktop and lock screens from the Calendar app.

OPTION ONE

Turn App Toast Notifications On or Off in "PC Settings"

1. Open PC Settings, and do step 2 or 3 below for what Windows 8 you have.

2. In Windows 8 or Windows RT, click/tap on Notifications on the left side, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshots below step 5 or 6)

3. In Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, click/tap on Search and apps on the left side. (see screenshot below)

A) Click/tap on Notifications on the left side, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshots below step 5 or 6)

4. Do either step 5 or 6 below for what you would like to do. (see screenshots below)

5. To Turn On App Toast Notifications

NOTE: If you turn on toast notifications, it will ungray the notifications settings and restore them to how they were set before being turned off.

A) In the right pane under Show app notifications, move the slider to the right to turn on and show app notifications. (see screenshots below)

NOTE: You will only see the bottom screenshot if you did step 3 in OPTION TWO below.

B) If you like, you can also:

C) When finished, go to step 7 below.

6. To Turn Off App Toast Notifications

NOTE: If you turn off toast notifications, it will turn them off everywhere including the lock screen, and gray out all notifications settings.

A) In the right pane under Show app notifications, move the slider to the left to turn off and not show app notifications, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)

7. When finished, you can close PC settings if you like.

OPTION TWO

To Turn App Toast Notifications On or Off using a BAT File

Note

The .bat files below are for the registry key and value below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PushNotifications

ToastEnabled DWORD

0 = Turn off
1 = Turn on

1. Do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.

2. To Turn On App Toast Notifications

NOTE: This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the BAT file below, and go to step 4 below.

3. To Turn Off App Toast Notifications

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the BAT file below, and go to step 4 below.

Turn_Off_App_Notifications.bat

4. Save the .bat file to your desktop.

5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .bat file to run it.

6. If prompted, click/tap on Run.

]NOTE: If you like, you can stop getting the Run prompt by unblocking the downloaded .bat file.

7. You will now notice your screen flicker and a command prompt quickly open and close as explorer is restarted to apply the registry changes.

8. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .bat file if you like.
