Solved AMD Display Driver Has Stopped Working

Occasionally I'll be watching a youtube video (this only happens in fullscreen), and it will freeze up and I can still hear the audio. After 2-3 seconds it will resume and in the bottom right it displays something along the lines of "AMD display card stopped working and has recovered". A few times I've even got the VIDEO_SCHEDUALER_INTERNAL_ERROR on the BSOD.

I checked and the drivers are up to date. Any suggestions?

Hi there,

have you had these issues all the time? Or did they just start happening after a driver update from AMD? It's not always wise to update the videocard drivers. Sometimes newer versions introduce new issues.

I for instance also have an AMD videocard. All drivers newer then 13.1 result in a crash in 40% of the time I close Internet Explorer.

So, what I'm trying to say is. Try to downgrade your AMD drivers to the latest version where you didn't have this issue.

AMD display card stopped working and has recovered

I received that message quite frequntly when I first installed Windows 8. The screen would just go black for a second and then I would get the message; however, something must have fixed my issue and, since I have not upgraded any hardware, it must have been a Windows Update or a driver update. So, check to make sure all of your updates are current and make sure you have, in fact, installed the latest drivers. To confirm that, you can download this AMD auto-detect utility to take the guess work out of that concern:

Snoober- I seem to be having trouble downgrading, can you point me in the right direction?

I just successfully connected and downloaded the executable. Can't say why for sure but it sounds like your DNS routing is giving you a bad route to that server.

Here you can download the older drivers ==> Previous AMD Catalyst? Display Drivers

I'd advice you to first try the 13.1 version. Just uninstall the drivers that are on you pc now (via Configpanel/ remove software). Then reboot the pc and install the downloaded drivers.

Just downgraded to 13.1, i'll post here if I have the problem again.

Since the release of 13.1....after a driver update...for about 2 weeks I'll get that same exact error message...I'll see it 2 or 3 times and then I won't see it at all. It's like cycling itself or something and then all is good. I've been using 13.9 since it was released and this is the first time with a driver update that "I have not seen" that error message. So maybe AMD has worked it out....fingers crossed anyway.

I haven't....I'm still running 13.9 and after the first 2 weeks....it's been running smooth.

That's really annoying. I guess you've now come to the part where some 'trail and error' is in place.

I don't advice you to downgrade further. I'd advice you to upgrade to the next stable version, 13.4, and try that one for a couple of days. Eventually it might be wise to try using the latest BETA version to see if that one gives the same issues.

Are you sure the drivers of your motherboard are all up to date with the latest versions?

I read a few years ago on the AMD site that one cause could be the power supply and not feeding enough power to the video card under load. You could try reseating the video card and the power cables to the video card.

I was using IE 10 at that time (Windows 8). But since two days ago I'm using IE 11 (Windows 8.1). Since then I haven't had that annoying bug yet.

As for your advice....I don't want to use another browser. Been there, done that, hated it. I'm just a Microsoft Fan-Boy who sticks to the classics

Well, part of the problem could be that it says i'm running 9.12.0.0 (just realized)
When I check for driver updates online, it says my driver is up to date. Where can I download 13.9?

Edit: Yeah, this happened in both chrome and opera

I think i was refering to you. Oh i hear ya i am a pure M$ guy too.... I really hate FF, Opera and Chrome. TBH.
No I mean at the time was to troubleshoot through that not to use.
But the issue you know is ie10 or whatever. So all good.

There is a simple fix for this. I have tried all the TDRxxxx this and TDRxxx that, increase voltage on graphics card (which I really did not want to do) etc. My machine would have this problem just opening Outlook. I would either get the not responding error or the machine would just freeze up.

This has worked for me:

Open a command prompt as administrator:
Click start
In the search box type cmd
Right click or shift right click the cmd.exe command that appears in the programs list

At the command prompt type:

powercfg.exe /h off and hit enter (this command disables hibernation, if you want to enable again change off to on)

Close the window and reboot

You should not experience these annoying issues now. Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 have a default power scheme that is set to "balanced". Seems that this scheme may be throttling the GPU and is so frustrating. I have read loads of post in numerous forums and none of the fixes suggested worked for me.
