Am I getting something wrong??

Is it true that if by 5/13/14 one does not install the Update 1 to Windows 8.1 then it will render the system deprived from future security patches?
I thought that like with other Windows versions, Windows Update will install all required updates at any time, keeping the system updated with no restrictions.

I believe that is the plan. They have done this before with other products, just normally not so fast.
