Running Windows 8.1. Have admittedly modified it quite heavily but perhaps someone could point me to the root of what I have screwed up.

Pretty much, any apps which have the purple wheel splash screen do not load (presumably crash). Normal windows settings work fine. Windows applications and Metro apps works with no hitches (I have none downloaded but default Music, Games all start with no issues).

Much appreciate any suggestions.

Modified what? Using what? 3rd party software? Is your copy of windows a registered version? Can you recall when it stopped working properly? Have you tried restoring to an earlier state?

Could you give us more information?

Probably wasn't worth mentioning it, not anything that significant:

Windows install in Truecrypt-ed.
Start8 to restore Start Menu.
MacType which applies anti-aliasing similar to ClearType.
Removed a number of things items from navigation pane like Skydrive/Libraries via registry changes.
Remaped Desktop location.

I recall it working at some point, so it wasn't from install.

EDIT - For some reason logging out and logging in fixed it. Restarting however (which I did try before posting here!) did not. In case, anyone finds this and is experiencing the same issue.
