So I see many having issues updating to 8.1 here. Is this just few minority or are many having an issue? I just reinstalled my entire win8 about a month ago so I really don't feel like doing it again.

Honestly, I'm not even sure how my upgrade is going. HERE. I am starting to miss the days when upgrading didn't involve an App store, though.

I hope to have good feedback for you -- eventually.

It took a couple of hours including the downloading. At first browsers were having problems with locating DNS. After a couple of reboots the problem seems to be resolved. I had to re-install Gadgets and reinstate login without entering the password.

I worked my up from a virtual machine, to a slow 32-bit celeron and now two monitors on my XPS8100. Works great!
Mine is TBD. After one upgrade and it fussing about my UEFI default security settings, I went with a fresh Windows 8 install, setup my UEFI for secure, and now waiting on the very long download from the Windows Store.

Im having the same issue. I am unable to enable secure boot because my computer came with windows 7. Also is anyone having issues with metro apps running in the background after closing? I have modenmix and I'm wondering if that could be the culprit. I have enabled boot to desktop and it seems to take longer to boot than it did in win 8. I am also having issues connecting to the internet. In 8 I was able to instantly connect after boot, now it takes about 3-5 minutes after boot to connect. Any tips/suggestions on how to resolve these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Download took about 20 minutes.
Installed fine (at least 30 minutes).

I finally have confirmation that "apps" now stands for my desktop programs, not just App Store applications. I (we all do, I presume) now need to re-install every program & update. So, this will take several hours.

It's all good. :)

The first attempt ended in failure because the system couldn't connect to the internet, so problems arose in signing up and accepting terms, I don't know for sure, but when the error flashed on the screen there was no back button, just a roll-back.

The second attempt went smoothly, no re-download required. No aditional changes or re-setups were needed.

I've done three units thus far with no real problems other than having Microsoft change my user account to what they want rather than what I want. The should have given a choice. I could not find a way to change name/password so set up new account and deleted the MS one and lost all files that were linked to my account. Backups are soooo nice.

Taking 8 hours a unit to update is not pleasant, have two units to go - not offering a disk is ridiculous for folks with slow internet and multiple units to update. They are making it harder and harder to like them and their products. Linux isn't all that user unfriendly any more, they had better watch how they treat their customers.

I am waiting awhile on the two to go since I've read of many problems on one and the other - Lenovo hasn't put out drivers for windows 8 yet much less 8.1 so not going to hinder the Lenovo further by updating it for awhile. If others get along I may give it a go but it is my main unit and 8 hours without it isn't going to be nice.

Seems those with newer rigs have more problems. Drivers and/or UEFI secure boot? I dunno. Mine with an older Acer went without a hitch, although I don't totally agree with methodology.

Agree. They should have offered an ISO just as they did for MSDN and TechNet subscribers for quicker installs. I bought W8 media for fresh install > I feel I deserve an ISO also, although in the end the ISO does no good for me because I have to download any way and I mirror backup. But unlike you, I only have one machine. I can surely see your gripe with multiple.

And the updates went fine as well.

I was running Win 8.1 Preview. MS told us that, if you run the preview, you will have to re-install your apps. I though "Apps" referred only to Windows Store apps, but it turns out all of my installed progs were gone after the update.

Overall, very happy with this laptop -- great for work & was very good for gaming when I originally bought it (haven't tried any games last year or so).
Actually, I had planned to upgrade from Vista Ultimate to 8.1 Pro.

It now looks like I can't because after running the Microsoft 8.1 Upgrade Advisor, I found out my laptop won't support it because of hardware security issues:
  • Intel - XD bit
  • AMD - NX bit
One of the main requirements of 8.1 is microprocessor implementation of above settings. If not supported on machine, then 8.1 upgrade will fail and subsequently revert to previous OS.

Seems the only way I'll get 8.1 then, is to purchase a new machine with it pre-installed. Win 7 Ultimate Upgrade is now on order for this machine.

To add some good news among all the trouble reports that flourish on the net: did one of my daily-used laptops yesterday, a recent Toshiba. As always (expecting the worst), made an image backup first.

Update from Store went very well (apart from needing a minor adjust to the sound settings after it updated the sound driver). Total time approx 1,5 hours. Everything works as before, am quite impressed.
