2nd monitor goes black and says "Input Not Supported"

Both monitors work fine in 'Extended'
or one-at-a-time thanks to Brinks "Second Screen" Shortcut - Create in Windows 8

But when I choose to 'Duplicate' the 19" monitor says "Input Not Supported" . I've been researching but haven't found the solution yet.
19" monitor is onboard VGA
24" monitor is onboard DVI-D
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 also has onboard HDMI

Do both monitors have to be same resolution for duplicating the image on both?
I was hoping to use the second one to give a clearer view when I try to help others learn some basic computer stuff like cut/paste and simple excel.

I also have 2 similar monitors and both work in duplicate mode but with funny results, secondary one (VGA) has very elongated picture and is no help at all in that mode. Problem is most likely that secondary can't achieve same frequency and resolution as primary (DVI).
If you lower res and frequency of primary monitor to match secondary's capabilities, it should work.

both are 60Mhzbut one is 1920x1080 while the other is 1440x900
either one will work in duplicate mode on a laptop VGA. Maybe its just DVI / VGA don't play well together when screen size don't match
guess I could always hook my big screen up to the laptop VGA with mouse & keyboard for helping others

I think its a resolution issue. I run three monitors in extend. One is 1920 x1080 and the other two are 1280x1024. If I switch to duplicate my 1080P monitor and one of the others run in 1280x720 and the other just shows a blank screen. My guess is for you, its switching to a resolution that is not supported on one of your monitors. In duplicate it tries to run the same resolution on all monitors. It also appears duplicate only works with two monitors.

I'm only using 2 monitors. Maybe if both monitors were DVI-D or VGA it would duplicate. Guess I'll get a DVI-D to VGA adapter to find out.

Put it in duplicate and see if you can change the screen resolution on the one that works. Lower it one notch and see if the other monitor then works. I should have left my last statement concerning three monitors out of my post. My three monitors are all connected via DVI. my main screen is HDMI from the video card and then goes through an HDMI to dvi adapter. I don't think that matters. I think it's the resolution being used, some monitors just will not display certain resolutions. Ideally you want identical monitors when using duplicate, otherwise like CountMike said, you get a distorted image. I noticed on my setup. my dispayed image was picture framed on one monitor and an incorrect resolution on the other. Plain and simple, it just looked funny.
