Solved Too much security?

I've done a clean install of Windows 8 64 bit on my notebook. For security I have installed AVG and Malwarebytes and, of course, I have Windows Defender running. I have two questions: First, do I really need both, AVG and Malwarebytes, installed? Second, would AVG and Malwarebytes conflict with each other? Thanks

Installing AVG should automatically disable Windows Defender. Malwarebytes, especially the "Pro" version with a paid license, is a good addition to either AVG or Defender. I use Malwarebytes with NOD32 v6 Beta (HIPS is finally working now) and all is well.

You are right about Defender being turned off. I just checked and it is, indeed, turned off. I was not aware of that. The Malwarebytes that I have is the free version. So, I'm going to leave things just as they are. I'm assuming that since Defender is turned off, there should be no conflict with the free Malwarebytes and AVG.

If you turn on Defender again, a conflict would arouse between Defender and AVG ( Since they're both anti-viruses )

Best to work with AVG and MalwareBytes for your computer...

I use the free AVG. I was told that the free one would have no conflict with Defender. Does anyone know if this is correct or not?

When you install AVG it will automatically disable Windows Defender. Because it disables Defender, there is no conflict.

As long as your computer is in the condition you describe in post #3 (AVG on, Defender off) you're good to go...

Is it enough just to run windows defender and malwarebytes free edition and is windows defender good enough to replace a third-party antivirus program?

I find defender to be iffy at best. windows security essentials is a little better, but i find 3rd party to be the way to go.

Windows Defender also includes the Microsoft Security Essentials engine, and I personally consider it good enough, when coupled with other built-in security features (e.g. Smart Screen), to be a stand-alone solution. The AV engine is certainly robust enough that you should be fine. Also, keep in mind that no solution is foolproof, and safe usage habits will go much further than software.

MSE is part of Windows Defender in Windows 8.

Hi, i have done a nice clean install of windows 8 64bit, and then installed AVG FREE and has been working lovely for the last dew months, until last night, where it tells me windows defender is disabled, and avg free is disabled. It will not enable AVG but will enable windows defender! And what makes it worse that in AVG's mind AVG is enabled.
