A year ago my dad gift us a new laptop to be used for our business. Upon opening it, I immediately installed Avira, but after prolonged use, I realizing there's a lot of flaws that disregards any USB with malicious files. I tried to open Defender but the message displays:"This app has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer. If you're using another app to check for malicious or unwanted software, use Action Center to check that app's fault."I went to Action Center only to find out that Avira had completely replaced Defender as a default anti-virus.Is it safe to uninstall Avira and put back Defender? 'Cause I'm fearing that since the Avira replaced Defender, the latter would no longer work and couldn't reinstall again, putting my laptop at huge risk.

Hi Rouward,

Defender will automatically shut itself off In the presence of another AV. From what I've heard this is so Microsoft cannot be accused of monopolising the AV market within its operating systems.

You'll need to either set exclusions in Defender so it does not detect Avira, or stop Avira from registering in the Windows Action Centre.

I use MBAM Premium and had the same problem. There's a setting in MBAM that stops it registering in WAC and now they both work jointly for dual protection.

Hope that's of some help.
