Good morning, Here in England we have a magazine called "Which?" and they are very good with comparing different services. In a recent edition Firewalls etc., and the official windows Defender came out on top of their survey, my daughter has never used any thing else but Windows Defender and has not had any trouble at all. On the purchase of a new computer running Windows 8 I have not downloaded any third party defences and will continue in that until I come across any thing doubtful.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Nothing, since I used MSE for Windows 7 and now it's integrated into Windows Defender for Windows 8.

In idependent testing Avast is the best , i use Eset smart security because i know it inside out. Microsoft's AV has been consistently bad for years its getting better but i stil wouldnt touch it

I use Windows 8 Defender and have no problems. The best solution is to stay away from questionable sites.

If you are smart enough not to download and install viruses, you don't need a third party anti-virus.

    I installed
Baidu Antivirus since my AVG would not work with the 8.1. I ran the Initial Scan and it found 3 Nasty' and one ad-ware problem.

Also just running the Windows firewall along side the windows defender. So far everything is running smooth.

Third party software firewalls still have their place, for the right kind of user. For advanced, well-informed users (not intending to be snarky), is a third party software firewall still a good idea? Or can we rely on Windows 8's own firewall in combination with anti-virus software? I like...
