Windows Defender Updates Without Windows Update Service

I am on Windows 8 (original/classic x64 Pro), and since I have now installed all updates, I attempted turning off the Windows Update service, and then tested updating Windows Defender. Voila! It worked.

But if I keep my system in the configuration, will there be an issue running or updating Windows Defender (and would there be a functionality issue for Windows itself in the future)?

I copyNpasted this from another board; this might [or might not] work better:
Go to Control Panel -> (Switch to classic view) -> Administrative Tools -> Task Scheduler.
Set up a recurring daily task to run the following command (with double-quotes):
    "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe"
    with the following arguments:
    -SignatureUpdate

I have already done that Roland from last week (we discussed it on MSFN) but still thank you. I just wondered if I completely shut down the Windows Update service and clear out the Software Distribution folder (because Windows 8 has no more updates), will there be any issues in terms of Windows functionality, and will Defender be able to update (manually or scheduled) with the Windows Update service turned off?

It worked when I tried it, but who knows right? There may be an issue I'm not thinking of.

That's cool. I appreciate your help. I think what I'll do is try shutting down the Windows Update service for a week, and see if the definitions update every daily. I'll keep everyone posted.

It did work. My Windows Defender definitions kept updating when the overnight task ran. And it did so WITHOUT Windows Update running,

I have since re-enabled Windows Update though to allow for the manual installation of Server 2012 updates. But I haven't run the "check for new updates". This way, my system can still install updates, without a bloated Data Store file that I no longer need.

I have Windows 8.1, Pro/32 and I have the Auto Updates shut off, for better update control. However my Windows Defender does update itself.
Of course, I can always just open the program from my Desktop shortcut and do a manual update at any time.

In 8.1 Windows Defender seems to be a better program than it was in Vista or even Win-7. With an improved GUI anyway.

    Cheers mates!

Well in Windows 8 and 10, Windows Defender actually is the replacement for MSE. Whereas in Vista and Windows 7, Defender was the anti-spyware/intrusion app. So it plays a different role altogether.

On Windows 8.1, what is the current Defender build? I have v4.8 on Windows 8 (original), but I wondered if Windows Defender was upgraded to v4.9 (similarly to MSE)

I have a further question, regarding updates. When I update manually or use the Task Scheduler, I receive an error in Task Scheduler, saying "The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)", Or I get an update message if I perform it manually, saying I wasn't able to connect. HOWEVER - Windows Defender DOES indeed updates.

    Can anyone explain this anomaly?
