Hi. I joined this forum simply to get help with this problem. Malware has hijacked my laptop and I can't seem to get around it. HP said they could fix it for $100 but I'd rather not pay them.

If I click on C:\ I get an error msg. stating "C:\ is not accessible. access is denied." I can't install any programs. I can't do a system restore, and I can't run Recovery. It seems any .exe won't run. I can't run admin. command prompt -msg says there's no program to run it. Many video's wont play, including any Netflix video's.

I could really use some help. If anyone needs more info, like specific error msg's just ask.

How do you know that it is Malware? Access Denied can be caused by permissions messed up by the syncing of the profile from Microsoft's servers.

You need to post the error messages, so that we can help determine if this is a messed up permissions problem or something else.

run something like a recovery usb or CD (macrium etc.) and see if you can access your drive that way too..

I think its a virus cause I've gotten error msg's stating my computer was infected ...but it could be a coincident. My file associations do seem messed up but I'm not real familiar with such things.

can't run/install Macrium or any program for that matter. Only workaround I can figure is to burn an .iso image onto an ext. drive (1 TB) and boot from USB.

i'll need access to another computer (cuz mine can't install or make changes) so I can DL a program (isotousb, macrium...) to help me burn an .iso image to boot from, then install to hard drive (or continue to boot from usb). I was hoping there was a way to fix the issue by just using my laptop, but ok. That's what I was thinking, just misunderstood you. thanks.

I was hoping it was just messed up file associations and there was a simple way to fix that, since I don't know what the defaults are.

Also, when I was looking at my file ext. associations I couldn't find an .exe (which seems to be the main problem). Closest was an .ex_ I think.

Have you even gone through the bios and recovery buttons on your HP laptop? is that what you have?

Can you hit f8 or f12 during when you start up your computer and go into safe mode?

hold shift while starting computer and all that jargon...?

k, tried recovery from start up menu (f11 tap...) but it failed once I got to the file backup section as no files were found on C:\. I tried a few times. Neither would recovery run by bypassing backup as "no recovery image was found." Also failed to reset, and refresh.

Also, I tried running the program IsoToUSB from an ext. drive ,to burn the image onto another ext. drive, but the program wouldn't even run there.

though google chrome does allow Netflix playback, where as Explorer hasn't allowed playback since the virus hit.

....oh, btw,, I don't know how to reproduce the error msg, but initially after infection I got a couple warnings, while using Explorer, stating that my laptop had been infected with malware and that my personal info was vulnerable.

Go through the steps at the Majorgeeks.com Malware Forum on the post titled "Read me first." Over at bleepingcomputer.com, look for Farbar. There is a tool in his set that may fix this permission problem if the guide at MG does not work.
