Solved Best 3 AV packages to cure virus/Trojan infection

Yes, I did a stupid thing and now I’m paying for it. I downloaded installation packages for Burn4Free and Magic DVD Cloner. One or both were infected with what appears to be a Trojan. The problem is that Windows Defender found it, and quarantined it, and I removed it, but it was either a botched job, or too much for either of us. Now, I’m still plagued with such persistent popup advertising on the browser (Mozilla Firefox) that it’s almost unusable.

I’ve found and weeded out a few bad entries on the hard disk and the registry, but am spending far too much valuable time at the project. I clearly need help.

So, what are the three antivirus/antimalware packages most often recommended by you folks?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Stan Schultz,

Welcome to the 8forums.

2 of the 3 of what cipals15 says, Malwarebytes and Junkware Removal Tool are most recommended.
The last 1, Trend Micro, doesn't have to be considered as really recommended.
I would recommend Bitdefender, only because I use it and it has protected me against every threat I have seen.

But as usual, most people will say that the AV program that they use is the 'best', but there are quite a few factors coming with the 'best' security.

I had same experience with FF. Ads were driving it crazy. But...they have a plugin for "adblock +". What a difference. Give it a try.

It occurred to me that I never got back to this forum about the outcome of my anti-Trojan campaign.

Well, I tried Kaspersky because it was relatively inexpensive at Walmart, but it was almost as much of a nuisance as the Trojan because every second time I touched the keyboard it interrupted with some sort of warning statement or request for permission. Yes, I presume it's configurable, but at that moment I didn't have the time to learn another whole new technology. I uninstalled it and the package with its disk is gathering dust somewhere in the corner under a heap of other jetsam.

Instead, I installed both Malwarebiytes (Malwarebytes Premium | Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware (SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!). It took several full scans by both before they rooted out the Trojan and killed it, but at least that crisis is past. And, there have been two or three times since their installation that one or the other has detected something hideous lurking in a potential download. About the only other time that I hear from either program is when they're either downloading an update or running a scan.

At the moment my biggest problem with them is scheduling the type, frequency, and timing of their updates and scans. But that's NOT a fault on their part, but rather my inability to properly organize my own life.

I'm sure that in the future somebody's going to produce an even better anti-malware suit, it's inevitable. But for the time being I'd rate these both five thumbs-up out of five. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
