Truth is i hardly use my laptop (AcerAspireE1-532P-2883) now about 1 year old,
Looking at my msconfig file, under services I see McAfee Firewall Core Service" and
"McAfee Validation Trust Protection Service". Since I never installed anything McAfee one can safely say it came installed with the computer. However a search for McAfee on my computer shows no results and if I look at my Installed Programs, there too there is no entry for McAfee.
So what gives? Can anyone shed light on this please? Tell me what they are, what they are doing there and if \i could get rid of them, uninstall them and replace them with something else. Thank you

Thanks softwaremaniac. Your help is appreciated.
you said ''probably came with'' and I had mentioned that it did come with it, especially since I never installed it (and there are no ghosts in my house :) Anyhow, you said ''check your pc for any mcafee products'' And this to I had already mentioned. I wrote: "a search for McAfee on my computer shows no results and if I look at my Installed Programs, there too there is no entry for McAfee.
In other words no matter where you look or how you look McAfee doesn't exist (except in msconfig). As to the link, thanks for that as well but it too mentions the ''add remove'' program of windows so nothing as well. Thanks again

I apologize then, it was fairly late. If it's not installed, you can safely install another AV solution :)

My , my apologies are definitely not needed, Help, any help, is always well appreciated. As to installing another AV solution. This too is not my issue at the moment. 1st I need to know what it is, then once I know this, then make a decision if installing other av is necessary or not (which of course would also imply getting rid of that one, which seems impossible, since it exists and yet doesn't exist.
