    Major problems with New Lenovo

    Hi,

I bought a Lenovo laptop Windows 8 in January...to replace a laptop that was running slow that my husband used. I tried it for about 2 weeks...had problems understanding the Windows 8 concept. I put it aside and didn't touch it for 6 months...got the other one running faster.

I just retried it the last few days. Called Avast to see how to go about loading that in as I bought a plan one year ago for 3 cpus 2 years. The fellow was very nice, offered to send me the info by email or take over my computer which he did and found major problems, no JAVA, huge number of window errors from last January and the last few days. He wanted to fix it for me for 119 or one year for 179....called Total Support. I panic-ed because I thought maybe I had gotten through to a scammer. I hung up.

I am not sure if I bought a plan with this computer..Have to go to Best Buy and ask tomorrow. Any suggestions? I just ran Windows Defender on it and it came up with NO THREATS Also downloaded Malware Bytes earlier before the call and it found 11 problems.

I hate to spend the money to fix this if I am still going to dislike Windows 8....I believe I can get a free upgrade to Windows 10. ANY advice greatly appreciated. I have worked with Vista Forums and Windows 7 Forums to fix things before.

    Thanks so much!!
    Barbara

My advice, seeing as you haven't really used this and presumably haven't put much on to it would be to restore it all to day one 'out of the box' condition. W8 (8.1) gets along just fine with the default standard settings and Defender security. I wouldn't (me personally) add any 3rd party security software because it tends to bury itself deep within the system and can prove a drain on resources.

There will probably be a user manual already preinstalled on the laptop. Try typing Lenovo into the search box (or just begin typing on the start screen) and see what comes up. If not then it will be available on line at Lenovo. That will tell you how to reset back to factory settings.

I don't have Java installed and can't remember the last time a website said it was required to view it correctly. Java is a pain, and a security risk. Unless you really really need it then don't install it would be my advice.

BE AWARE that a reset will remove anything you have put on the PC so be sure to back up important personal files first.

Thanks for the advice. I am reading up on how to do a system restore and working with the Lenovo forums. Do you think this will get rid of all the viruses and malware? The man who was trying to sell me a product to repair it said it would not......

Still have Avast running on laptop since bought a plan or not installed ? Malwarebytes is good the free version, as can use it with another Anti-Virus with no conflicts to scan and if it found items and removed did it tell you what they were ? System restore won't help if you are truly infected still. Question is what made you think you are infected, slow PC or Avast tech ? Java is in ways unsecure, not a thing tell someone risk not having it. Tell you what errors found on system ?

What I am referring to is a 'Factory Restore' and not the Windows 'System Restore' which is more for minor troubles and to undo any recent changes. A factory restore returns the unit to 'out of the box' condition as if it had never been turned on.

There will be a very specific procedure to do this, typically pressing one or more buttons and start up and then following the on screen instructions.

Sure need to jump to a reset already ? Do you have a virus or did Malwarebytes just find some adware cookies, not sure yet. Any system corruption maybe fixed with system file checker and dism. Meaning reset is a last resort. Laptop sitting for so long, have you updated windows updates or anything else since using again.

    Lenovo with problems

I would like to try system file checker and dism. Could you tell me how to go about it?

Also, I would like advice on how to protect before I connect to the internet again. The cpu came with Defender and McAfee. I removed McAfee intending to use Malwarebytes and Avast. Apparently McAfee was not entirely removed as when Avast took over my cpu he showed me a McAfee file said it was encrypted.

    Thanks so much!

If you want to try these,

Run this first and reboot afterwards.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

    And DISM,
DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8

As for protection. Well 8.1 is protected out of the box with Defender and imo that is all you need. Having installed MacAfee then you have the potential for conflicts and a slow down due to resources being used. Its a personal choice but I wouldn't entertain a 3rd party security suite (having used them in the past for several years). Always issues in my experience.

About getting rid of McAfee try here, most Anti-Viruses are hard to uninstall, https://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331

Can use Windows Defender and Malwarebytes free to do regular scans, Defender to be the real time protection. Unless want to pay for another AV. Lenovo support website has the specific steps on how to restore PC to the factory default for each model.
IMHO you should use that information and restore the system.
