Maybe another program, any games use plugins ?

    Thanks.
It has no games and only a few utilities that I have long-used on other computers. The one thing new that I set up is voice recognition. Its the utility that came with windows 8.1

This is a new computer. I bought it in March for my wife to use for voice-to-text, and had problems from the beginning. My difficulties may be due to the adds. They started right away. I can't stop the adds. They are so thick that they cover each other. And loud sales pitches. I clicked on an opt-out in one add and it opted out of 92 companies. (but I continue to get the adds)

The only two sources of files input were 1) the Kaspersky DVD and 2) the DVD that installed the external DVD reader. I am suspicious of (2) because it loaded and installed more stuff than seemed reasonable to install a DVD reader.
Your welcome! Never stated results of using Malwarebytes yet. Pop ups was something had not mentioned before happening to you.
Only happen with Mozilla Firefox ? Sounds like some adware installed or browser hijack in some way. Kaspersky is an AV it's hard to believe would install something bad ,maybe just open candy,(extra free software) . What was software for DVD reader, same here open candy.

Run if you have not Malwarebytes and Kaspersky full scans. Try Windows Malicious Removal tool at command prompt type mrt.exe

I ran Malewarebytes. It identified and removed 163 items. There is no more plugin.exe or Plugincontainer.exe showing in Task Manager.

Last night there were still some popups after running malwarebytes but that didn't repeat (yet) today. My laptop has 4 user accounts. I will evaluate each one. Then I will run mrt.exe.

I hope these different programs don't interfere with each other and that they analyze all user accounts at once.

Maybe i would sign on to each account an run Malwarebytes and no MRT is something comes with Windows gets updated through Windows update won't interfere. When run a scan should look at log see exactly what it found. Only can interfere when running real time protection on 2 AV's.

Seem as though were infected with something, might not of been from software, but maybe from internet (e-mail, download, etc..) Run Kaspersky full scan too ?

I now have a licenced Malwarebytes. I ran a full scan with it on all four user accounts. It didn't find anything. The only log I saw was a repeat was the 0 results that was on the window.

I ran Kaspersky Internet Security full scan on all four user accounts. It didn't find anything either.

I ran mrt.exe full scan on all four user accounts. It didn't find anything either.

Could there be additional log files that I am missing?

I have been comparing IE versus Firefox on the same websites. IE has not had any popups to date. Firefox has had problems. I will post those results as soon as I get them written down.

Log i meant was when malwarebytes first found items, just to look at log to see what it found. Seems you are clean now. I like Firefox better, but that is my opinion, what is safer against what you had before, hard to say both browsers can be good.
Not sure as may have conflicts using Kaspersky and Malwarebytes together, 2 real time protections can conflict with each other and cause issues.
Can try Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit for browser, read here https://www.malwarebytes.org/antiexploit/

I applied instructions for creating exclusions in each program for the other. I Googled "compatibility of malwarebytes and kaspersky Internet Security" but I don't remember the exact pages that contained the instructions.

See this, some cases MBAM can play well with other security suites, but really did not need buy premium of Malwarebytes as it is good enough to run it just using a scan when having another AV https://forums.malwarebytes.org/inde...security-2015/

My Firefox has extension Noscript installed. I stopped a lot of adds by blocking specific items that Noscript shows -- whose names indicated that they are commercial. But that is treating the symtom instead of the disease.

The nature and extent of symptoms seems to depend on 1) what website I am on at the time, 2) on which of my user accounts I am using, and 3) on which browser I am using.

Links don't always lead to where they are supposed to. Using Firefox, one link on a sevenforums page went to a page that kills Firefox when that new tab is selected. I couldn't copy the page's url because that makes Firefox unresponsive. The page only had script on it and the address contained Cts.AdsSend.net. This was repeatable several times.

Then with Google I found the page Remove Cts.AdsSend.net pop-up ads (Virus Removal Guide). IE could read thst page but it would make Firefox unresponsive. That was repeatable at that time.

But today I discovered that the results depend on which user account I am using. I might have been using a different user account. In one user account, both Firefox and IE can display the page OK. In a second account Firefox is OK but IE freezes when I try to close the browser while the tab containing the page is open. This seems to be repeatable.

Another problem with this computer that I haven't thought of as virus-related before is that HP Support Assistant stopped working and HP support hasn't been able to fix it.

Not a virus expert, i would try some steps on that link, preferably Adware cleaner. Seems as though and i am not familiar with multiple user accounts on a PC and results along with adware,,malware or virus. Malwarebytes and similar programs might not be effective enough. Possible some other software on PC brought this about other then through an e-mail or webpage, as said in article. Can not discuss ad blocking on this site, forum rule. 13) No ad blocking discussions. This site depends on ads to pay for the costs of running and maintaining it.

I faced the same problem and found the solution from a China website. Just need to uninstall, delete related files and registry in regedit.
    1) Use any program uninstaller to delete the program that u think u suspect as malware/adware. *In my case, 'Discover Treasure ' was the culprit.

    2) Open task manager (ctrl+alt+delete )>look for 'plugincontainer.exe'>right click >end process.

    3) Click Start >search for 'regedit'>click edit>click find>type 'plugincontainer.exe'

    4) Now delete the 2 files which u can find 'plugincontainer.exe'. *In my case,I've deleted 'Service Mgr Discover' and 'Update Mnr Discover '

    5) Open C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86) to find the remaining files of the malware *There's 2 if not mistaken *. If u can't find it there, try looking in C:\Users\*UserName*\AppData\Roaming for it. *The files hv long weird name with combination of alphabets and numbers.

    6) Delete the files *Check before u delete tho.. Ps: u won't able to delete 1 of them yet.

    7) Restart your device.

    8) Delete the remaining file. And DONE.

Hope this works for anyone who's facing the same problem!
Andddd pls understand that I'm new to a forum like this and I'm translating the points from the website so the way I explain the steps might be a little confusing ><
    That's all
