    anti virus

I have Win 8.1 and security does not read well or at least as good as it used to be.

Or do you disagree and think 8.1 security is good enough?

is there a free a/v program I can use that will wok well with 8.1? They all say they are the best so I am looking for an opinion that is tried and found to be good.

PS- If I use another, should I just turn off Defender and the firewall? I assume if it is not a suite I would leave defender on.

I'm no expert but I would suggest you never turn off your defender and Firewall.

About A/V I just installed 360 because I wanted a sandbox and that is the only free one that included it.
    It also has a shredder.
    Here's a site I used to decide.

Thank you for the referrals. I just wonder if I used another program if it would conflict with Defender.
I would choose Bitdefender but it has no firewall.

If one installs a 3rd party firewall [Comodo is one example], W8's Firewall is disabled by default. If one installs a 3rd party antivirus [Avast, AVG, Avira are just 3 examples], W8's WD is disabled by default.

That rings a bell and thank you for reminding me. Do you think it wise to stay with Defender?
I was thinking that maybe win 10 will have better protection. It should be only a couple of months away now.

Windows Defender from Windows 8 on is supposed to be fairly good. I use 3rd parties for 2nd opinion scheduled & on-demand scans.
