Dell Win8 Pro without any AV, suspect infection

Helping my daughter connect her Dell to our WiFi.
- our router is visible (along with all our neighbours) but connection fails
- the default Windows "Help me solve connection problems" is a dead loss ... a perpetual cycle of going nowhere
- and I know very little about WiFi setup ... count that as "Nil"

My ISP could not connect via LAN cable using TeamViewer. The ISP tech told me the laptop probably has an infection.
Without an AV on the PC I am stopped.
- no AV I just dont believe it

I have installed and run (without internet-connection) ... SuperAntiSpyware and free Mawarebytes ... no problems found.

Not having any experience (nor much faith) in free AV, I came to eightforums.com to get some help
- before I did, I found Latest version of Avast Antivirus but it reads that free Avast is a cloud install with adware "Chrome"

Free Bitdefender download is 158KB ... obviously a cloud install.
- I dont want to expose the Dell to the web without some sort of AV
- I want an AV that will scan for virus infections.

The Dell is extremely slow ... it has only one app installed a Book-keeping program
- my daughter is an Apple fan ... need I say more. Its like pushing a rope uphill.

Would appreciate any help ... have I missed anything ? :(

Thank you in advance

Just discovered free Avast is also an online installer
- would this be a problem while installing Avast.
- the laptop only has her financial affairs on it, nothing else (no internet banking)

My daughter is 44, old enough to make a decision about the AV she would prefer. ;)

To make *only* a full scan of PC I've been always using Kaspersky antivirus ( not Internet security ), it's not cloud install and has pretty good detection rate, you can remove it afterwards because it's resource hungry and slows down PC so I don't use it for every day purpose.

Windows 8.1 has built in anti virus which enables / disables it self depending on whether you have 3rd party Anti virus.

As for connection problem, it's unlikely because of infection.
You can start by restarting a router and installing a newer driver for laptop's wireless card from manufactures website.

EDIT:
Oh mate, I forgot to mention, it doesn't matter which AV you install, none of them will work without an internet connection, cos AV needs to update itself, so fixing connection is first step, only then AV scan will make sense.
