I ussually check software like this:

1. It is not listed on Softpedia.
2. Its website is not rated by WOT.
3. It does not offer a trial version without payment, which could be scanned on virustotal.

It claims to use Bitdefender engine, why not to use Bitdefender Free instead? I would sugest to avoid:

My parents clicked on the 'you have been infected' message and ended up calling the number.

Just as I thought, not my system though, someone I know fell for the scam, I pulled the plug on their internet connection mid stream while they were supposedly "fixing" the problem when I found out.

They are in the process now of cancelling the transaction, changing passwords and all that other fun stuff.

You have to be careful nowadays, there are a lot of companies out there cold calling people, claiming to be affiliated with MS, telling them their PC is infected & offering "services" to clean it. The usual result is either they leave a trojan back door on your PC, install malware or they charge you for something you could have done yourself.

Example: I recently encountered a couple who got a call from such a company, & paid over $150 for "services" to clean out/optimize their PC with their "special malware removal tool." The "Special tool" turned out the be Junkware Removal Tool, a cleaner that is absolutely free for anyone to download & use.

I can't state with 100% certainty if this company is actually offering legit services or not since I know nothing about them. Some companies do offer valid services to aid senior citizens & people that aren't comfortable with technology. But for the most part, keep in mind these services connect to your PC remotely & anytime anyone does that, you are taking a risk. Especially if that connection is the result of someone calling you out of the blue saying your PC is infected.
