    Windows Defender. Does it work

    Hi folks
My wife has a new Asus notebook running on Windows 8.0. The sytem security settings indicate that Windows Defender is the active firewall and anti-virus programme but can anyone advise me if Defender does actually provide a robust antivirus protection or is it better to disable it (if so, how?) and install a recognised antivirus programme ie I'm still using XP on my old computer and have used Grisoft's AVG system successfully on it for several years.
    Any advice welcome

I used MSE(Defenders "father") since it came out on my laptop(but tried others), and on my new desktop with Windows 8.1 I've only used Defender. It all depends on your internet habits. I don't use online banking or P2P file sharing so for me it's enough. If you do online banking though you'll probably want something else. See this at AV Comparatives.

Thanks for the advice, Cliff. Much appreciated. Will stick with Defender on the Asus as there seem to be lots of horror stories out there from people who've tried to use additional or alternative av systems on Windows 8. My wife doesn't use internet banking on it or any other stuff that will make it susceptible to cyber pirates. Our main computer is used for all that sort of stuff and is well protected although still running on XP (I wish they'd continue to maintain XP as I love the functionality - Windows 8 is just too glitzy and 'front end' for me)

You're welcome. You should upgrade to 8.1 then to 8.1 update then will be surprised how quick you can get used to it even maybe actually like it better. the start screen and apps screen is just a glorified full screen start menu, nothing more. And the taskbar is much more useful than XP's(like seven's).

I noticed OP mentioned Windows Defender and firewall in the same phrase.
Windows 8 [and Windows 7] have a separate component called Windows Firewall, which is just fine for most users.
Windows Defender in Windows 8 is simply a reFaced Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE]; and it does work well.
Windows 8 will turn off its firewall and/or its Windows Defender whenever a 3rd party firewall or antivirus program is detected.
Windows 7 does not turn such off.

I use Windows Defender on my Surface Pro 1 with Win 8.1 update, works well enough for 'safe' browsing. I also use the free version of Malwarebytes, and scan with it once a week or so, it has found trojans that Windows Defender allowed through. Malwarebytes will not interfere with Windows Defender, as long as you don't purchase the full version, that allows full time scanning...

I do online banking & Amazon to buy things.
I keep a strict account of what gets charged to my card.
Everything is as it should be.

I use Avast & its' firewall.
Nothing gets through that is unwanted.
