can do it on another laptop without any problems. I have now had to start doing a Custom Scan as the full scan is just so slow that there must an issue with the full scan. Can I fix it or do I just have to carry on doing a Custom Scan only? :sarc:

Depending on the files it is scanning or if another process is running at the same time it may take a while. Let it do its thing.

I don't think it should take more than 10 hours to do a full scan should it? and there is no other process running at the same time. I used to be able to do a full scan in an afternoon but I just can't work out what the problem is now.

You can exclude locations(for example my data partition where my photos music videos are excluded, and my backups and system image is too because they are already clean. Also in advanced settings you can turn off scanning removable drives and archive files if you don't make any changes to them. This can speed the scan time up a lot and won't have to choose custom any more.

I can try that thanks, I don't understand why one of my laptops can do a WD full scan with no probs and the other one could probably take days if I didn't cancel the scan. :(

Are your laptops close to the same manufacturing date? If not, if they are like mine, a year+ apart, yes, one of mine is slower than the other. If you have twins, then I'm puzzled, unless one laptop runs more gizmos than the other.

Thanks, I did an sfc scan about five days ago and found no corruptions, but I could do another one before running Windows Defender again to see if that help.

I would have to look up the manufacturing dates, but I just assumed they are of the same batch as I bought one a few months earlier than the other.

You might want to run the SFC 3 times. SFC doesn't always fix everything on the first pass & it's usually recommended to run it 3X

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html

If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 times restarting the PC after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.

I have noticed that in general, things tend to run slower on a laptop since most don't have the power of a desktop. You might want to check your msconfig & see what all is starting up when you boot & eliminate the unnecessary programs.

Sorry but I don't understand why I need to to run sfc 3x, if after the first scan there are no integrity violations.,

To scan faster one needs at least 8GB RAM and a SSD. That's what I noticed on my windows 7 ASUS X54C laptop. I use Microsoft Security Essentials on that and it's basically the same as Defender. With the upgrades it only took 20min. for a full scan, with the stock 4GB RAM and a 350GB at 5400rpm disk I had to let it scan over night. My Lenovo H530 with Windows 8.1 update has 16GB RAM and an SSD(system) & 2TB 7200rpm HDD(plus a much better cpu) and a full scan(system) takes about half an hour because windows 8.1 has more "under the hood" and more apps and programs.

Well, you don't need to run it again, but it wouldn't hurt to run it again just on the off chance it did miss something.:)
