I have discovered that my Windows Defender is off. I have tried everything but I can not get Defender highlighted, no check boxes, etc to turn on. I am using Windows 8.1

If you have a third party anti virus program installed then Windows Defender is turned off by default and will only turn on if you uninstalled the third party AV. Otherwise the suggestions of genet will help.

As I have mentioned, if you have AVG installed, Windows Defender will not turn on. You cannot have two anti virus programs running.

I think you will find that, once uninstalling AVG, Defender will turn itself on. If it does not, you can then turn it on yourself.
