With all the stories about various business being hacked I'm wondering how safe is it to place your personal information on cloud storage systems. I wouldn't worry about G-rated pictures, videos and various documents but what about documents with identity information, resumes, business letters etc?

I worked my up from a virtual machine, to a slow 32-bit celeron and now two monitors on my XPS8100. Works great!
I don't do it. I keep that type of information on an external USB drive and locked away.

Generally they are not safe. Ok, you can be fairly certain not to lose your data. But rest assured that private information does not stay private as soon you upload it to the cloud. You can protect it with encryption against being looted by some wannabe hacker. But as far as it concerns professional intelligence services like the famous NSA I would not count on it being safe, even if the data has been encrypted. What's more there have always been suspicions that government intelligence services are also involved in industry espionage. To make a long answer short: No matter what you do, your data is not safe in the cloud.

I use dropbox. I have an encrypted keepass database on dropbox for secure stuff. The rest of it just isn't that interesting. If a resume were to be obtained, big whoop. You hand those out to employers anyway, right.

Things like my tax returns are kept on local storage, backed up regularly and kept offsite.

About as safe as anything on the internet, which is never 100%. Even if not, a mere keylogger can easily grant a third party all your cloud storage account information.

As others have stated, it's best to use a CD/DVD/External HDD/USB flash drive for sensitive information. I don't use cloud storage services myself and instead use USB flash drives.

Yeah, I think I agree with what was said here. I've put my entire "miscellaneous" folder in OneDrive and a lot of my semi-personal stuff, but I keep the more sensitive documents away from there and on local storage instead. I once had a case where OneNote corrupted a few of my sections and I lost some notes, but much of it was old and it was no big loss. Still, the thought of something really bad happening and everything just vanishing into thin digital air is always in the back of my mind. Back up, back up.

I agree 100%. I store data on a home server, not the "cloud"...

Also, I would think that some employees that work at these Cloud storage companies can also access your data. Who knows what goes on behind the Cloud.
