Hi all ,,,I am wanting to copy certain keys data from the registry from my main computer to my laptop but having a problem how to do it. I see I can print the key name from the edit menu in regedit but how do I do the same with the data and type.
It would be ideal for me to just copy it straight across but as I say I have no idea how to or even if its possible.
Could someone help me please and I will be grateful for any replies.

I would not recommend to copy registry across the PC which might cause the PC unbootable. To copy certain key from registry, just click on the key to hight light then click on File->export.

I assume you mean user/program specific settings ?

Use regedit to export the key.

Then merge it on the other machine.

Hi both,,, I have a prog on my main comp that I want to copy on to my laptop , so I want to copy all references to it in the reg to my laptop and then copy the prog from the prog files.
The prog is Creative Woodturner which I bought in 2007 and there has been a few updates since then which I have updated on my comp.

I have the cd I bought before the updates and I kept a copy of the updates as I got them and I started from scratch and loaded them all in again on my laptop but it will not accept any of the passwords I have .
I have tried to get in touch by phone which is not now recognized and the support email is ignored so this is my only option. By the looks of it, it is still being sold but any phone reference is to the old number. The cd version works but it is not as good as the updated one and the designs I saved with the updated one will not work on the first version.
I hope that helps and I do hope you can help me please as I want to get rid of my comp and just have a laptop.

Have you tried their registration page? It all really depends on their license terms, whether you can upgrade freely to their latest version.

They say that The CD version has been discontinued and is download only

Don't export Registry Keys to another machine, it'll probably bugger things up or you'll get a bunch of errors or both! Find a way to obtain and install the latest version of the program; it'll create it's own machine specific entries.

In addition, registry entries do not have to resemble anything that has something to do with particular program and unless you know exactly what entries are one can mess everything up.

Your best option is to install the old program & see if you can update to the latest version.

I tried what you are trying to do a long time back when I went from Win 3.1 to 95 (Yes, I'm that old :p). A program spreads out multiple files in different areas of the OS. Tracking all those down can be quite the challenge & even if you do, there's no guarantee they'll function the same way (or at all) once you move everything.

Once a program is installed, Revo Uninstaler can catch all the registry entries and files a program placed on disk during installation. Unfortunately it's during uninstallation of said program. Or, you can use a program like this: Download Disk And Registry Alert - MajorGeeks to monitor what is happening during a program's installation.

Well ,,thanks for the replies gents (by the way I am 72 just turned) and I did try what I said and you were right ,,it did not work, so I backtracked and deleted everything I did and rebooted and I have no errors thankfully.
So now I am going to start from my cd that I bought ,,load that in and try to install the updates again, but Im not holding my breath.
I am sure you understand ,,I mean you wouldn't buy a television and then a year later pay for it again.
That prog you mentioned sounds good that lets you know what and where has been installed and then gets rid of it all when you uninstall,,, I was kinda hoping that I would find someone that had the prog (Creative woodturner) that didn't have a use for it anymore and would like to let me have it.
Well thanks again and I am just going to just keep on trying.
