security suite

I have a combination of programs to protect my pcs, namely; Win 8.1 Defender, SpywareBlaster, MBAM behind a router.
I know no pc is totally secure but I was reading about a free security suite which, if it does what it says, is impressive.
It reads that you do not have to install all the features if you do not want to do so.
Because everyones' product is the "best" one has ever seen, I was curious if anyone has used or is using it.
I do not know if I can mention names here so will hopefully get a response that I can either post the name or use a pm.
I do not want to load up my pc as what I am using does not take up much room and is adequate, but am open to new ideas. The latest poor reviews about 8.1 Defender is what prompted me to look at options.
Defender and MSE used to be pretty good but seem to have slipped with 8.1
Thank you
Peter.

You can post a legitimate referral.
(I'm always skeptical of the word 'free'!)
Native Windows security tools working fine for my purposes.

It is Comodo Security Suite, just for reference and I agree about native M.S. tools.

If you like tweaking a firewall and trying different security strategies, CIS is a good option, but I think, that it is way too good. Its HIPS is so strong, that it might lead to some BSOD and HIPS generally is pain to use even when set to auto and then you are not really using its full potential. Its AV is weak, it is there, just so it could be called a suite, it relies on HIPS detection. I would recommend to go for some cloud solution instead. HIPS is too complex to use, not that it would be a bad choice, and standard AVs are dead. :sleepy:

1. Firewall - is there any reason, why do you want to use some else rather then Windows Firewall? Indeed, its hard to use, just google: windows firewall control, there are some nice applications to use it easily. If you still insists on using something else, try Private Firewall,, it has HIPS as well, but it will work just fine without it. I like, that it does not hide behind the name suite, it is basically the same thing like CIS.

2. AV - if you want it light Bitdefender Free is the best choice, if you want it hard 360 TS has 5 AV engines.

3. OnDemand - MBAM is great for scanning, you can also try HitmanPro, its free version scans at startup. You can also loose SpywareBlaster, I believe it still uses HOSTS file for prevention, that can be easily replaced with DNS like OpenDNS or NortonDNS, which does not slow down PC like HOSTS and it is way more effective.

I too like native tools. I may have been influenced by some articles speaking negatively about the Defender for 8.1
I have had no problems with my current set up and in view of your comprehensive reply will leave things as they are.

Microsoft itself recommends other AV than Windows Defender.
It is only included in Windows, because people "forget" to install AV.

It is still a basic tool with low detection for people, who do not really care about security.

We are close as I use 8.1 with Defender(newer MSE), MBAM, SpywareBlaster, the native firewall and am behind a router.

I was helping a friend with Vista and noticed Defender is part of the OS which is turned off when MSE is downloaded. ODD!

That old Defender was a single program and MSE was the same program + an Anti-Virus program so that is why Defender is turned off. This is true except for Win 8 as they integrated MSE into the OS and renamed it Defender.

Yeah, until next occasion. Anyway isn't it a hint when company that made some SW, particularly AV labels it's own product as "not good enough" and recommends to use something else ?
I also found many free programs better than some payed ones to do same thing.

Defender

I have always felt uneasy using Defender due to its test scores but I try to use Windows compatible programs. On occasion I wander that is why I have supplemented SWB + MBAM. If I were not behind a router I might use another program.

Anyone out there with 8.1 using another program and feel satisfied with it?

I think you can protect the machine without having to pay, or not?
