I have a new laptop (HP G7-2292NR) with Windows 8 and today I turned on the laptop for the 3rd time and I see in the bottom right corner Windows 8.1 Secure boot isn’t configured correctly build 9600, what does that mean? I am so new to Window 8 that I cannot find a thing, bear with me I need specific instructions. This is a hugh change given I went from XP to Windows 8.

You should just have to enabled secure boot as outlined in the tutorial to have it remove the watermark without having to do anything else.

If the watermark is removed afterwards, then you could try the KB2902864 update provided by Microsoft to remove it. :)

I guess I am not understanding the tutorial and am not sure what to follow. I thought I wold use the link below, Using the Enabling Secure Boot on a notebook computer with Windows 8, but it says by default secure bootis enabled. Secure Boot (Windows 8) | HP® Support
The message about secure boot not being properly configured, does that mean it is disabled?

It could just not be configured, but still be enabled. I'd double check your UEFI settings to make sure.

If it is, then you could use the KB article to remove the watermark. :)

I am in the System Configuration and trying to get to Secure boot but using the arrow keys it skips over Secure boot. Although I cant use the arrow key to highlight it does say disabled next to Secure Boot.

Hmm, I'm not sure how you would be able to enable secure boot if you are unable to select it, press Enter, and select Enabled. You might check to see if you have the latest version as F.26 dated March 01 2013 that may help with this.

If you like, you could still use this below to remove the watermark without enabling secure boot though.

Update removes the "Windows 8.1 SecureBoot isn't configured correctly" watermark in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2

I guess the question is do I need to enable the secure boot? If not then I can remove the watermark.

You don't need to enable secure boot to run Windows. It's optional, but you would have better security with it enabled if you were able to.
