    Hey mate,

Your Built in Defender should work just fine for most things (full fledged antivirus, that). In addition, I would use Malwarebytes Free.
The last one is a manual scan to make sure Defender hasn't left anything behind concerning PUPs, etc.

Really, that is all you need for protection, unless you come across some heavy malware, or discover that you have a lot residing in your system, in which case you might need some heavier tools to help you fight back. Not that Defender doesn't do its job, but if you keep having problems, you may need some serious removal tools

I agree, Windows Defender (Microsoft Security Essentials in a new wrapper) is fine as the first line of defense.

You might try other free AV programs such as Avast and AVG, but they shouldn't be necessary. be alert during installs of any free applications for any extras (usually toolbars or Chrome) - DECLINE any extra software, including trails of the paid product.

Having a second line of defense is also a good idea - these are usually on-demand scanners but some also offer real time protection.

    Dustsailor already mentioned Malwarebytes.

ESET Online Scanner is also very good (it takes the longest to scan and clean though)
herdProtect - Anti-Malware Multiscanning Platform in the Cloud is very good - scan only at the moment, it will identify but not fix.

On demand scanners can run with a real time AV program, although some members recommend temporarily disabling the real time when you run a scan. I do not since neither seem to mind the other app.

You do not want two real time AV programs running on your machine - Malwarebytes real time and any other real time AV program play well together.

EMET (Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit - EMET - TechNet Security) is a worthwhile addition and no-one mentioned AdwCleaner Download which is useful on occasion.

If you're looking for an alternative to Defender, then you would like a new AV. There are many choices, some free, some paid. There's a thread over on 7 Forums that has a listing of these & you can weigh the pro's & con's of each.

Just remember, nothing gets everything 100% of the time, or we would all be using that product.

I liked Avast for a while, had to customize it a little to get it to do what I wanted, but it did the job well. Moved back to Defender recently because I fancy a simpler, cleaner look (I like using the built-in features).

From what I can tell, it is widely favored here on the forums for most people, because it is fairly easy to use and was rated pretty high in catching baddies in recent years.

^ Borg's link above is a great thread to look through for more detail about it, and others you might like to try out. Good luck (I believe that thread is loooong)!
